Chapter 4: In Which Holmes Proposes a Theory
Where as the previous day had been one of physical labor and dress-up the next was one of labor of a different sort; that of the mind.
8:00 in the morning found Holmes, Watson and Theodore all sitting around the living room table under the shelter of a now intact ceiling, Theodore in a ‘proper’ set of clothes that Holmes had dug out of his box of disguises. He claimed that they had once belonged to the pageboy, Billy, who had outgrown them a while back.
They fit quite well, Billie had been, by all accounts, of a similar build to Theodore, and it gave him a chance blend into the crowd. Holmes had also furnished him with a pair of slightly worn spats, their purpose being to hide the futuristic logo, which graced the outer side of each of Theodore’s shoes. Sadly, the shoes being of a white synthetic material the spats did not do as good a job of concealing them as the detective would have liked, but they would have to do.
The subject of discussion was to see if they could figure out what exactly had triggered Theodore’s seemingly unexplainable time traveling episode.
They would have acted sooner had not both Watson and Mrs. Hudson been averse to tripping over bits of ceiling all day, you could tell though, that Holmes had never forgotten the more pressing problem at hand for an instant.
“You say that you - being unable to make out the appearance of your attackers in the fading light - could only tell that the taller of the two - who had a deep British sounding voice - was evidently the leader. And the shorter - of French heritage - seemed to be continually referring to some sort of device or devices which was informing him of certain dates and events?”
“Yes sir, as near as I could make out” Theodore agreed nodding his head
“And from what you tell me of their conversation they knew in advance of your presence in that tree?”
“Yes sir”
“Not that I am doubting your word, Mr. Trent, but did anyone else see them, Your parents or brother perhaps?”
All of a sudden, Theodore felt awful, of course! How could he have been so selfish as to forget? His poor mother and father were probably going out of there minds with worry and he was here, having the time of his life, all his dreams coming true, meanwhile his parents probably thought their son to be dead.
Bending his head in shame, he could only manage a small “no.”
The detective seemed to notice the change in his subject’s body language but thankfully said nothing about it. No doubt picking up on the fact that Theodore would prefer to become permanently invisible at that particular moment.
“Well, with the present evidentiary support one must give in to surmise, it would seem that your two friends knew of your arrival in their century which, from what I gather, seems to be your next destination. And using some futuristic method, foreign even to you Mr. Trent, traveled back in time to see to it that your arrival should be indefinitely postponed.
“Obviously, upon arriving in this century you set in motion a chain of events. The result of which is undesirable to them. Whether it was fated that they start you on your way or it was a simple case of coincidence re-”
“But Holmes” Watson interrupted “have you not said to me on more then one occasion that you do not believe in coincidences?”
“Really Watson you do have a remarkable Memory.” Holmes replied dryly “however in this case I am forced to concede that the boy’s teleportation may indeed have been the result of a coincidence although I am myself averse to such a theory, may I now continue?”
