“By all means” He surrendered, a little flustered
“As I was saying: whether or not it is the result of a coincidence remains to be seen, it also seems very likely that Mr. Trent is fated to disappear again when it is time for him to progress to the next stage of his journey. And in doing so will take someone with him.” Holmes informed his eager audience, Gazing penetratingly at the boy in front of him. “Have either of you any idea as to whom that might be?”
Theodore just sat there miserably, three emotions were competing inside him for control, the first being that he did not want to leave Holmes and Watson - they were kind to him and had turned out to be everything he had ever dreamed and more. He wanted to stay with them forever and ever and he did not see how any place that did not have them in it would be worth going to - the 2ed was that he knew he would miss his family and felt horribly disloyal thinking about staying away from them forever.
And the third was one of awe, awe at this great and orderly mind, a mind which had seen both the obvious and the contrary, the hard and the easy, the probable and the improbable. It was hard to know exactly which of the three to chose, he decided on awe for the time being; after all, not many people got to listen to such a man as he rattled off a chain of events, coincidences and probabilities as easily as if he had been reading it off a page.
“Um maybe…maybe it’s one of you guys?”
“What would make you think that?”
“Well…maybe there was a reason besides the fact that I was thinking about you two that made me land here…Maybe it was supposed to happen, maybe I was supposed to think of you so that I would land here.”
“A very interesting theory, no doubt, and perhaps the correct one. Are you certain that you were given no other details, hints which would provide us with clues as to the identity of your unknown companion?”
“No. like I told you sir, he just said ‘Him’ as if he hated the name of the guy so much that that he couldn’t bear to say it.”
“Most interesting…” glancing at his pocket watch Holmes stood up from his chair “I am sorry to cut our meeting short, I have, however, some pressing business to attend to.”
Theodore was visibly disappointed
“Perhaps you would care to accompany me Mr. Trent?” He enquired, a sly gleam in his eyes.
“Really sir?” he almost couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“Are you sure that’s a good idea Holmes? After all” Watson hesitated “do you not have rather a dangerous project underway at the moment?”
“Indeed, you are correct Watson, but I also have a strong feeling that it would be best if I kept Mr. Trent here, under constant supervision, and since I cannot postpone my outing I must ask him to join me in it.”
“But Holmes, Could you not leave him here?” Watson pleaded, “Surely that would be the wiser course of action for both of you.”
“I’ll be fine Doctor” Theodore was touched by Watson’s kindness and concern and yet he wanted more then anything to go with Holmes, He was fourteen after all!
“Indeed, I would, if I thought it was the better of the two options. I would not wish our mystery man to call while I was away and trigger another episode. And, as it is most reasonable to assume at the present time, that it is fated that he call, I feel certain that it will happen at the time it is meant to happen whether or not Mr. Trent is at Baker Street. Should my opinion turn out to be the correct one I should prefer to be on hand when that time comes.”
“Very well Holmes, if you are quite sure.”
“Sadly, one can never be sure of such things; I am however, set on seeing it through as I see fit to do so. It is no reflection upon my trust in you my friend, simply an added precaution.”
He then turned back to Theodore. “so then Mr. Trent, if you are not averse to the chance of being followed by unknown and decidedly sinister persons, will agree to do everything I say without question or hesitation and consider yourself to be of an adventures disposition, you may join me in five minutes time for what is sure to be a most memorable excursion.”
