The irregulars jumped into a lengthily explanation recounting every detail enthusiastically. Holmes or Lestrade would jump in from time to time correcting them, and adding information while Watson got up from his chair, disappeared for about five minutes and came back with a fully loaded tray of freshly baked blueberry muffins.
“And so you see” Holmes finished “we are in a bit of a dangerous position”
“I don’t understand sir” Theodore felt awkward, he didn’t know how to address this new Holmes, 1800 Holmes, as he had begun to call him, was still in 2103 Holmes’ room, knocked out and dead to the world. Theodore wished he could have the same privilege.
He had never felt so guilty about so many things before in his entire life.
“My point is, Mr. Trent, that either they already know of your presence here, as the sentence: “I saw him fall just where this says a few days later with Him” suggests, the second ‘him’ of course being my past self and the first being you. Or, if they haven’t they are going to.”
“But sir, they were there to stop me going back in time, but I would have uh…‘warped’ anyway.”
“Yes, however I am hoping that it was they who started the wheel turning in the first instance, that they were fated to come back and send you on your way and that had they not gone, this never would have happened.”
“I don’t see how that could work sir.”
Even Watson was looking confused.
“Hmm…let me see…let us try it this way: Moriarty and Fenwick see you fall through the roof, with my past self, they live through what happens and do not like the outcome.
Somehow, they manage to travel back in time to the day you traveled back to the nineteenth century and attempt to put an end to you. They end up transporting you through time, but in 2103, at the time when you arrive in your particular manner, none of this has taken place, it is the future.
Moriarty has not yet traveled back in time, he has not tried to stop you, not understanding the chain of evens he does not realize that it was he who set them in motion, you understand?”
Holmes explained this large idea very carefully, as if he thought he would disrupt the events of which he was speaking simply by saying the wrong thing.
“So…it’s already happened to me because my future is your past? Because it was my future to travel to the nineteenth century but here that is the past, which is finished, Moriarty has already come and shot me because he did that in 2007 but it’s also the future because he hasn’t done it yet?”
Theodore was trying desperately to comprehend how the detective had come up with this in the first place.
“Precisely” Holmes affirmed.
“But…why did they try to stop me in the first place?”
“Because they saw you fall through the roof and found you to be an inconvenience.”
“I’m so confused”
“Time is a confusing thing” Holmes insisted, he sounded impatient.
“What now? Should we stop them from going back in time?” Theodore offered.
“Then neither you or my other self will be here, no we must let them go back, I feel it to be the right course of action, fate is a tricky thing, and one should be careful where one interferes”
“What then?” now it was Theodore’s turn to get impatient.
“Well, as my present self is still here it stands to reason that my past self will go back to his time at some point, we must have confidence in the fact that this whole drama has already been played out, everything will turn out as it is fated too, we must simply go where the current takes us.”
He seemed adamant, as if he could see that very current in his minds eye, dragging events toward their ultimate unfolding.
“Which is where?”
“I have absolutely no idea.”
