“Well uh…blueprints…and you heard her describe the guys…she didn’t say anything else about them.”
“Indeed” he was sounding impatient “often it is not what they tell you but what they do not tell you that is of the greatest interest, and it was a tube containing blueprints that was stolen, you mustn’t forget to include even the smallest details.”
“Okay…so um…a tube with plans in it…”
“Perhaps” 1800 Holmes stepped in “Events have begun to unfold.”
His double nodded.
“I don’t understand sir” Theodore was feeling more idiotic by the second.
“No doubt, Theodore, you have read the fanciful little tale of ‘The Valley Of Fear’ which Watson was so good as to publish?” 2103 Holmes invited.
Theodore looked over at 1800 Holmes, his face had all of a sudden gained about ten years, he must have looked up Watson on the computer they were now working on, Theodore didn’t need too, he could imagine what had happened.
Holmes had never come back, Watson would have died never knowing what happened to him, he had probably stopped writing, the loss of his friend would have destroyed him. As it had threatened to do before when Watson had thought both Holmes and Mary to be lost. But as awful as Theodore himself felt, he knew that Holmes must feel even worse, and that he was no doubt eager to go back and set things right.
There was also the issue of why nothing had changed; Theodore could only imagine that it was because 1800 Holmes was destined to go back to his century, and only if he didn’t, only then would things change beyond repair. That is why a book that Watson hadn’t written yet, a book 1800 Holmes wasn’t even supposed to know about, was still in existence.
Yes, things would be fine as long as 1800 Holmes got back to his century in time, he would. After all, it had already happened; they had only to do what they had already done, whatever that might be…
“Ya…” he blushed “five times.”
Was it just him or were both Holmes’ actually looking impressed?
It was spooky, watching them standing there side by side, slightly different but exactly the same. Identical fires burning in identical pairs of identical eyes.
Were it not for the fact that they were wearing different clothes, Theodore would have given up a long time ago.
He wondered if he would be able to sleep at all that night…
“Excellent” 2103 Holmes continued approvingly “what is it then that I say about Moriarty and the recondition of crimes perpetrated by him?”
“That” he began, pleased with himself “Just like you can recognize a certain painter’s work by the way he uses his brush, you can recognize a crime Moriarty was involved in by the unique characteristics that define it!”
2103 Holmes looked over at himself, “there’s hope for the boy yet.”
“And so it is in this case” 1800 Holmes continued for himself, giving Theodore one of his rare smiles “and although I know very little-”
“Almost nothing” 2103 Holmes corrected him.
“Thank you, I can speak for myself.”
“My apologies” he allowed, sheepishly.
Jeez, and Theodore thought his brother was bad.
“Thank you, as I was saying, although I know very little of technology and the like, I believe I can safely say that Moriarty has decided to grace us with his undesired presence, if, as you say,” he continued, turning to himself “he has indeed been cloned.”
2103 Holmes nodded in affirmation.
“So, Moriarty and Fenwick are the ones who stole the plans? And you…guys” Theodore was struggling to find the proper method of addressing them at the same time “think that they are going to use whatever it is those plans are supposed to show you how to build, to make loads of cash?”
“Well, indirectly, yes” 1800 Holmes confirmed.
“Do we have any idea what the plans are for? Like…what are they supposed to show you how to make?”
“Yes, in fact I am certain”
“Okay…what is it then?”
Both Holmes’ looked at each other and nodded, 2103 Holmes opened his mouth to speak:
“A-”
“A ZEDDING TIME MACHINE!”
