“You ever read any of those books about him?”
“Uh…” He could feel himself beginning to sweat “nope…hardly any.”
“You sure? I haven’t and I was hoping you could tell me something about them.”
“Nope, sorry, I don’t like those kinda books.” both Holmes’s owed him big for this.
“Well, I suppose most kids your age don’t, never mind.”
Great, now Theodore was being considered a lemming, an ordinary kid, this guy was really getting on his nerves.
“Why don’t you tell me more about the computers?” he asked, through clenched teeth.
“Sure, why not” Greg seemed disappointed.
The investigation continued for the next few hours until 5:00pm by which time Greg had spent a considerable amount of time talking about the year 2006 - at which point Theodore had begun to feel physically ill. - and the many television shows that had been on at that time, particularly one called Futurama which Theodore did not understand at all, though it sounded relevant to his present situation, and some things about it seemed oddly familiar…
The irregulars had spent most of their time following orders from 2103 Holmes whose counterpart had been sticking very close to Powell with the exception of a few minor abscesses, seemingly listening to everything he said.
Theodore had since learned from Greg, that the Doctor was the muscular man he had seen talking to 2103 Holmes upon first entering the lab.
Finally, it was time to head back to Baker Street; Greg shook hands with everyone in the group, including Tennyson, who he pretended to understand, for, as Deidre had informed them all later, he had answered Tennyson’s:
“Beep clock clock” (it is a very interesting laboratory you have here.)
With “it’s nice to meet you too, sadly no, we don’t, but we’re hoping to have one soon.”
The drive home was much the same as the one to the scene of the crime, Theodore, Lestrade and both Holmes’ in the police cruiser and everyone else in the coach craft.
It was not until they were about were about twenty minutes from Baker Street that Lestrade turned to 2103 Holmes who occupied the seat beside her.
“So, what did ya make of him?”
“He knows Moriarty took it.”
1800 Holmes spoke up from beside Theodore in the back seat.
“Indeed, he was continually perspiring and seemed to be watching what he was saying very carefully, shall I give them the theory or shall you?” He asked addressing himself.
“Be my guest” 2103 Holmes prompted.
“Well, I had it from a Miss Parry, one of your co-workers… inspector” yes, like his counterpart before him 1800 Holmes was going to take a while to let this ‘woman in command’ thing sink in
“That today’s blueprints are actually miniscule ‘microchips’ which are made to project their information into a computer temporarily, so that none of it is saved on the computer database in order to avoid problems with…‘hacking’ I believe it’s called. Therefore, the microchips are only used for the most secret of information.
“These plans were apparently so secret that even Powell’s assistant had no idea of their existence, as the comment he addressed to you, Mr. Trent:
‘I always wanted to meet him, I wonder what it must have been like in his time, you know, such a different world…it would be so cool to go there don’t you think?’
Would suggest, as, if he had known about them, he would not have wished to bring suspicion upon himself by way of that statement.”
“So you were listening” Theodore summed up.
“Really, would I miss such a chance as you had put within my grasp by your being Canadian? Luckily for us, he rather warmed up to you. Now, as I was saying: even the assistant did not know of the microchip’s existence. I had it from the same co-worker of yours, Lestrade that the tube in which it was kept could not have been more then an inch in length and width at most.
“Therefore, the criminal would have had to have extensive knowledge of the laboratory and the man who had hidden the microchip. He also knew the habits of the security guard, a Mr. Mazzie, who, by the way, I have spoken too, and he seems a most trustworthy fellow.
“I know from experience, that you cannot learn the layout and customs of a household so completely by bribing servants or sneaking inside. So, he must have visited before, these rendezvous would be quite regular, the security guard would have had to be informed at some point and would have recognized the visitor, even by way of the fleeting glimpse that he had.
If we follow this train of though, then it stands to reason that Fenwick –being far too distinctive in appearance – was not chosen for the errand.
“Therefore, I am inclined to think, knowing Moriarty as I do, that it was he who visited Doctor Powell laboratory, and why would he do that, unless he was going to meet someone? And why would he meet someone unless it was about something important? Undoubtedly the blueprints, and the only person who knew about the blueprints was Powell himself.”
“Wow” was really all Theodore could manage after that incredible statement.
“Wow’s right, we have enough to bust him! I am so calling Greyson…”
But 2103 Holmes put out his hand to stop her reaching for the controls “Lestrade, we’ve still questions in want of answers.”
1800 Holmes pitched in “indeed, why is he defending Moriarty, why was he involved with Moriarty, why did Moriarty steal the plans when he knew Powell, and could simply have made copies, or have the persuaded the doctor to part with them? And why was Powell engaged in the construction of a time machine in the first place?”
Something yanked at the back of Theodore’s mind “wait…I dunno…” suddenly it seemed a really stupid thing to say, “never mind”.
“No, Mr. Trent” 1800 Holmes encouraged “do tell us what you have to say.”
“Well…Greg said that he saw you on the news a while ago, - 2103 Holmes I mean - when you were brought back to life. And he said that Doctor Powell and Sir Evan Hargreaves are kinda like rivals and Powell hated it when Hargreaves was the one who got to take the credit for bringing you back and that Powell has files and files on you. And that he was acting weird after you came back to life.”
“That must have been said while I was talking with your co-worker Lestrade,” 1800 Holmes informed the inspector.
“Well, that’s all he said about it.” Theodore assured him.
“I have an idea,” 2103 Holmes announced suddenly. “Lestrade, if you wouldn’t mind taking a detour, I should like very much to stop at ‘Chester & Co.’, Doctor Powell’s bank, I shall need your official personage to lay hand on the information I am hoping we shall find.”
“Why? What are you hoping to find?” Lestrade demanded, annoyed.
“I think, Lestrade, that we shall find the Doctor’s bank account severely depleted.”
