“Oh, fearless I see, I am in the presents of real bravery, my, this is exciting.”
It was then that Theodore remembered something his mother had always told him, his chair screeched along the floor as he rose to his feet; planting both hands on either side of the table, his face an inch away from a startled Moriarty.
“Only fools are fearless,” his voice rang with conviction as he pronounced each word slowly and carefully for the pustule in front of him. “It’s the people who are scared out of their wits but do it anyway that are the brave ones.”
Moriarty had quickly recovered his composure during this little speech, and was once again leaning back in his chair.
“And you consider yourself to be among that number Mr. Trent?”
“I was scared of saying what I just did, but I still said it, and whether or not that makes me brave or just really, really stupid doesn’t matter. The point is that it’s the truth, and that even if you kill all of us, even if we all disappear and no one ever figure’s out what happened to us, at least we will be remembered as brave.
As people who stood up for what we believed in and never let down the people we care about, even if you live to be a million you will always be nothing but a selfish prick with an ego problem who had brains and wasted them!”
A sudden sound burst through the closed door.
“Wait to go Theo!” Theodore whirled around; he hadn’t even realized that he’d been yelling, the exclamation had come from the other room and he recognized it as Deidre’s, a moment later there was a scuffling sound and something that sounded like a door slamming.
Lestrade’s voice broke through the racket “leave her alone, she’s just a kid!”
Theodore paled and his heart leapt into his throat as the buzz of an ionizer followed by a blood curdling ‘thud’ reverberated throughout the empty space in his soul.
“No!” Lestrade yelled again, a second later another ionizer was fired and another thud collided with the ground.
Theodore stood there, his thoughts were blank, what had he done? What had he been thinking? …what if they were…were…no, they couldn’t be…
“I think Mr. Trent” Moriarty was grinning, the kind of grin that could make an ego sizzle. “That you should endeavor to keep your thoughts to yourself from here on.”
Theodore resumed his chair and put his face in his hands.
“That’s better, now, as I was going to say before I was so rudely interrupted, there is a very simple way to remedy the problem which will result in all damage being corrected.
All it will take is the use of a most interesting device, which I have had the opportunity to have constructed n this very laboratory over the past two days. I don’t think I need explain what it is, as you already know, I shall travel back in time and stop you from ever having to survive such a traumatic experience as time travel.”
Again Theodore said nothing, still staring into his hands, he knew that it was imperative that he give no reaction, Moriarty had to go back, he had to shoot Theodore, if he didn’t, then Theodore would never come here. And if he didn’t come here, then whatever purpose he was here for would all be ruined.
Moriarty was talking again.
“Now, now, Mr. Trent, you needn’t worry, after all, it will save you a great deal of trouble.” and he began to laugh again.
“I hear that you have expressed a considerable amount of curiosity as to the whereabouts of your dear fellow time traveler…what is that name you have for him again? Oh yes, eighteen hundred Holmes, my, it does have a nice ring to it doesn’t it?”
Theodore knew better then to react this time, he knew what was going to happen, and he could not let his fear get the better of him.
“Come, come Mr. Trent, you know you have; surely you would like to find out?”
Theodore sighed into his hands, waiting for the punch line, he knew it would be a mistake to show that he already knew, so all there was left was to wait.
He looked up just in time to see Moriarty rise to his feet and stride over to the door, knock on it two times quickly, and resume his seat.
A moment later, the bald guard entered. Theodore had the strange feeling that he had been the one to silence Deidre.
Moriarty smirked evilly at his crony “Mr. Trent does look tired doesn’t he Silvers?”
Silvers’ face scrunched up even more then usual as he answered in a dull monotone “yup, sure does boss.”
“Don’t you think he should try to get some sleep?”
“I think it’d the smart thing boss”
“Very well, Silvers’ show our guest to his accommodations.”
