I understand the BSL thing...Most people think we sound like a bunch of lobbiests...only interested in the dogs and nothing else..
In order to get people to listen to you, you need to provide an alternative solution to the problem that adresses everyones concerns....Dog owners/the public/politicians etc..etc..
While understanding that the general puplic are right, there are a lot of irresponsible dog owners out there(not necessarily pitty owners)... and absolutely the public has a right to be protected...
In my opinion rather than promoting the really old and antiquated...."educate responsible ownership" line....which has no substance to it... and most importantly no repercussions, pose a structured system of fines/penalties.
These types of incidences (dog bites/attacks) DO NOT TYPICALLY happen to responsible dog owners let alone responsible pitter owners...therefore, I say the best way is to deal with these owners, is to have the dogs taken away(put down) and where these dogs have proven to be vicious/and caused injury a fine assessed to the dog owner accordingly...$2000 - $5000 Hit them where it hurts...the bank book, so next time they will think twice about owning a dog, or letting it loose in a park off leash.
While some may think this is cruel/unfair/unreasonable... you have just educated in one single blow to those people who shouldnt own this breed, or any dog for that matter associated with human aggression.
While at the same time, we have just rid the world of 1 irresponsible owner and educated thousands on responsibility and accountability of dog ownership.
NOW you have now just "educated responsible dog ownership."...I think you would see a huge drop in dog bites/attacks all over...and really if "we are all about responsible ownership" then what are we affraid of, by imposing this as a viable option.
In the incident that Selina is talking about, the SPCA advised the dog owner that he could have his dogs returned if he paid $5000 and had a bunch of restrictions imposed on them. He chose to have both the dogs uthanized.
In reality, the dog owner should have been fined $5000, and have the City put the dogs down. So what has this person learned....Nothing, and most likely he will go and get another dog sometime in the future.
What consequences did this person face?...none, What repercussions has impacted this person..none
However, the rest of us will share his blame, as now the City of Surrey is calling for a Pitbull Ban and yet again another public outcry...And so, the rest of us responsible Pitbull owners must go to defend our breed because of the actions of one stupid person...this person should be on trial not the breed.
Here's something ironic...In Canada, your dog can maul someone and you do not receive a fine. If you throw a piece of paper out on a roadway/hwy, and you are caught, you can receive a fine up to $2000.
Who has never thrown a piece of paper out of their car??? Would you do it again if you were given a fine of $2000...thats my point exactly, you have just been educated?
