Posted by Joyce on 6/7/2006, 6:56 am, in reply to "Re: new to Accokeek--have some questions" My husband first got Lymes disease in the late '80's when we lived in Clinton. They gave him a number since the cases in Maryland were so new at that time (I forget what the number was). It may have been dormant in his body for many years, but before we moved here, he was in college in NY for 4 yrs. He doesn't camp or hunt or hike or anything woodsey. We lived in an apartment for about 4 yrs. before we bought our first house and then the house had almost no wooded land on it. All he did was typical yard work. The Lymes disease recurred twice, so he's had it 3 times and he has permanent nerve damage. Tests for Lymes disease are often a false negative also. There was a vaccine, but they stopped it. Sorry for the bad news, but it's the truth. I still don't live in fear, but I try to remember to use a repellant. I don't always and I know I'm taking a risk. If I had the same symptoms my husband had or similar symptoms that have been attributed to Lymes, I would insist that I get treated for it even if tests were negative. I would take acidophilus and eat a lot of yogurt while on the antibiotics, though. --Previous Message--

: Thanks, Joyce. I have another question
: now--my husband was told by a co-worker to
: be aware of deer ticks. I have read up
: about them online and am quite concerned
: because they are sooooo small! Do I have to
: be paranoid just being out in my backyard,
: mowing, etc.? We have a small wooded area
: behind our house, but we have not seen any
: deer (I know they can live on squirrels,
: mice, etc. as well). I thought ticks would
: be contracted more if someone were hiking in
: the backwoods or something like that.

: Margo,
:
: Actually, most snakes around here are good.
: The little ones tend it eat bugs and small
: creatures. The bigger ones eat bigger
: rodents. If you don't like mice, you should
: love snakes. They hide under porches and
: might give you a scare if you see one, but
: they're just as afraid of you.
