Posted by Joyce on 9/27/2002, 3:52 pm I'm mentioning this in today's e-newsletter, so hopefully someone else will also answer. I do think that this is an important issue - or actually you hit on many issues that are vital. There are some good environmental activists and a strong civic association in Accokeek, which helps keep life worth living here; active citizens is probably the most important factor because government changes. We're having a big election in Nov. which will replace the majority of our county legislators and, of course, they're advocating for change (certainly they're saying "for the better" but you never know what they'll actually do). The Prince George's County General Plan (see link below) shows part of Accokeek in the "developing tier" and part of Accokeek in the "rural tier." The rural tier is supposed to be protected from development, but we keep having to fight sand and gravel mines, rubble dumps, truck transfer stations, and the like. This is because few people are farming the land now and they're selling it. The mining companies are buying. There aren't a lot of people who want to buy large tracts of land in southern Prince George's if they can't develop sellable homes. It would be nice if we had a solution to this problem and I invite anyone to offer some. Since there's already a link below, the following link will have to be copied and pasted into the browser. : My husband and I have been looking for a home
: in Accokeek for the past 3 months. I like
: the traditional and historic atmosphere.
: However, I'm curious as to what future
: projects/developments such as,
: shopping/towne centers, banks, medical
: facilities and pharmacies, daycare
: services, transportation improvements
: (rush hour congestion), etc..., may be
: coming withing the next 5 years. Will
: Accokeek or does Accokeek want to grow?
: What does Accokeek offer as a "return
: on investment" for buying a $300K+
: house? Will my value appreciate? With
: plenty of people moving to Accokeek and
: nearby areas, I would think that there
: would be some plans for development
: projects to service the people who live
: there now and are investing in their
: communities, as well as people who will
: move to the area in the future. I like
: the idea of living in a traditional, quiet
: and historic area, it reminds me of home.
: However, you may want to take a look at
: how they are developing in Clarksburg, MD
: (a town with alot of history). I've also
: noticed that the taxes in Prince Goerges
: County are higher in comparison to
: Montgomery County. How does Accokeek put
: that money back into the community, i.e.
: developments, schools, highways, etc?
: With Accokeek only being about 20 miles
: from DC, change and development is almost
: inevitable.
