Posted by Hiuare on 18/7/2006, 5:47 pm Of course, there is no denial of general human rights in existence in laws in SI. The Constitution adopted those general fundamental rights and expressed a Constitutional commitment upon Solomon Islands Government to legislate them into specific laws from time to time. However, the uncertainty of the limitations in which one human right principle would entail into a specific law in SI, is itself a challenge to SI human rights activists. I was upset with one of our SI human right activists, who came to Suva, and did not raise, our custom human rights, when they discuss the issue of application of the introduced Human rights principles in the region. The workshop ended up with a high note that SI and other regional participants should give more emphasis on adoption and recognition of UN Charter of Human rights and subsequent, instruments of International Human rights, Fiji human rights etc. Whether our representative is aware of it or not, what Fiji is doing is that it tries to force its leading roles of human rights, cutting edge work into Solomon Islands, whilst less regard was given to our complex and diverse society. This process of harmonizing Are’Are human rights, as one aspect of human rights to integrate with the introduced human rights laws in Solomon Islands, must be done. I urge our scholars from Are’Are region to undertake further studies on Human rights that exist in Are’Are society, and thereof, try to discuss with our people, how can we harmonize our human rights with the introduced human rights principles? This whole exercise requires a balancing exercise research studies on this issue. Failing, we will miss our opportunity to decide which human rights principle is suitable and applicable to exist and become laws of our country. In wider sense should the Human rights activists in SI, consider, incorporating a homegrown SI Human Rights that derived from these two sources of conflicting forces?

Care must be taken, when addressing, adopting, simplifying, and harmonizing introduced Human rights principles into Solomon Islands laws. Few women and leading human rights activists in SI, have, made tremendous efforts to ensure that human rights, must be given, a higher note, in our laws of Solomon Islands.
