Posted by Huaitoa Few weeks ago, the Association came out in the media and demanded that the it should be given the chance to scrutinise the Constitution and the Federal System of Government. After doing just this, Mr. President came out in the media again with a conclusion saying that the Bar Association does not think that we should alter the constittution because it will not resolve the law and order situation in the country. I do not know how he came up with such a conclusion. What we were expecting was for him to clarify the relationship between the present form of the Constitution and the State system of government, what we need to do or do not need to do? We is supposed to to come out with arguments of legal relevance, instead he came out talking like a politician. If he is going to be talking like a politician, then what was the point? I've heard what he said before, from politicians. His conclusion appear more predetermined. He was supposeed to come up with the legal arguments, some one else should make the conclusions. If this is what all the lawyers could come up with then I'll say, this is poor analysis. It was the Suri that asked to be involved. It now appears that all he wanted to do was to use the weight of the SI Bar Association to put across an argument that is largely political and in doing so throw the Association's support behind the factions of politicians that have continued to view the federal state with negativity. The best that the Association has come up with is just as good as arguing that the present form of the constitution has cannot solve the situation in the country either. The next logical thing would be, lets do something about it. cheers

Gabriel Suri's comments on the Constitution and the Federal type of Government as sought by some Provinces in the country is disappointing. Mr. Suri is the President of the Solomon Islands Bar Association which comprises of no body else but the Lawyers in this country. I took his comments then as the collective stand of the Association.
