Posted by nonoroke on 3/9/2003, 12:50 pm To kick this off, can I ask that we start with a "top-5" exercise. What do you think are the 'top-5; priorities/issues/problems facing Are'are? If we all enter our ideas, we can get some grasp of common opinions, less common ones, or even the sources of disagreement. This may guide our thinking in moving towards a symposium or meeting event. For me: 1)education 2)land 3)youth 4)women-men relations 5)services

I think maybe one challenge for us working together as a group, is to start developing some sort of common understandings on what we think is most important to Are'are.
(meaning literacy for all under 50, basic knowledge about our government system, and continuous availability of awareness information on current issues)
(meaning a commonly agreed-to process and framework for handling the evolution of land relations from the current system. although the future system cannot be foreseen, and may not be agreed on, the process for developing new systems should be established, so that people's aspirations and hopes are the basis for change, and not simply elites.)
(meaning a commitment to helping 75% of our population -those under 25- see a future for themselves in our communities - this means thinking carefully and creatively about what is important to youth, how to mold them positively and what we want Areka to be in 25 years)
(meaning improving how the two halves of our population deal with one another. addressing the poor attitudes and lack of human respect between men and women. giving some vision/hope amongst our men, who seem to have lost their direction. encouraging women to take up their partnership role with men.)
(especially transport and communications services to allow our producers to concentrate on producing and have access to markets guaranteed. Transport and communication linking within our region just as important as linking us to other regions)
