The bottom line is for both parties to resolve the dispute once and for all. TODAY'S AREKA COMPENSATION In Areka today, compensation claim generally divided into three types (1) Whitemen compensation which constitutes dollars only (2) Areka Custom compensation using shell money, pigs and other custom items and (3) Mixture of whitemen and custom, that is dollars plus pigs etc. DIFFERENT VALUES. Whitemen compensation is onerous for our people to meet because dollar is hard to earn. The price fixed for this is quite high. For custom; it is the cheapest and convenient in the sense that lower amount often placed and can be easily afford by both parties. The third type is mixture compensation; that is some dollars plus pigs etc often used. Since it constitutes both custom and dollars the total claims are often higher than the custom one. Am not sure which one applies in Honiara; but I think the mixture is often prefer. To retain and recognize Areka custom compensation we need to institutionalize it. CUSTOM SCHOOL. 1. Tahoka custom school had already set up. We can include a module that deals with custom compensation. 2. Our chiefs and elders in our village should train our young boys about custom compensation. 3. Our chiefs should continue to impose custom compensation on offenders in our village dispute tribunal. APPLICATION OF AREKA CUSTOM COMPENSATION. We can still apply Areka custom compensation in other parts of Solomon Islands so long as we fix the amount and value according to Areka custom compensation. We have to protect and maintain Areka custom compensation otherwise this false heads of claim so called "Mala Compensation" and white men compensation replace the true value of Areka custom compensation. I prefer Areka custom compensation because it is easy for our people to meet and rather convenient for resolving our disputes amicably.
