Posted by Diane (cross posting for Jen) on September 4, 2001, 6:11 pm That darn Buster!! He's making ME cranky now!! He has a corneal ulcer and all and I have eye drops that have to be put in his eye 4 times a day and some eye ointment that goes in twice a day and at bedtime, too. At first, I could kinda trick Bus into getting his eye meds. I would just casually approach him and put the stuff in his eye and he really sat nice and did well. Well, last night as I went to put the ointment in his eye before bed, he ran from me! He ran and ran and ran!!!! He is really getting to be quite a stinker!! ARRRGG!! He ran from me when I was trying to load him up to go to the vet. when he knows he has to do something he doesn't like, then he runs from me...always has....but as he is aging-it seems to be getting worse. He snapped at the vet-I told him to use a muzzle and he did not-luckily he did not get bitten. He snapped at the vet tech as she was helping me load the dogs and kids in the car to go home. He is soooo crotchety lately! Vet said because he is getting old? He does not ever growl or snap at me or dh or the kids, but he does it any chance he gets around strangers these days!! Not good!! I am afraid he could bite one of the kids, so when they are in the floor, Buster is outside. I dont like having to exclude him, but I have to!! He has to spend most of his time outside now. that is sad, but when a dog is feared unsafe, ya gotta do what ya gotts do. He is always very loving to us, he licks the kids in the face and he tries to lay in my lap, but still the running from me and refusing to listen and snapping at people scares me! So, lets just hope MR HARDHEAD BUSTER will let me instill his drops and ointment so he wont go blind. this isbecoming quite a challenge! Its nbot like I have all the time in the world to beg him to let me put the stuff in his eyes....but I have yo do it for him so he will not go blind!!!!! Hopeflly dh will help me hold him and we can work something out and get his eye better!! Wish me luck!! Buster is 6 and Boomer is the one who is 9. Actually, Buster has been a little crothety eversince we got him as a 12 week old pup! A lady had them and knowing how I love boxers she brought what was left of the 12 week old litter to our house. I fell in love! He is a gorgeous brendle! He has always not liked someone being in his face. When he was first with us, he acted almost snobbish to our ther dogs, like he'd rather live anywhere than with us. Weird. Finally he warmed up and things were pretty okay. I called the lady numerous times to ask why did she suppose he cated the way he did. Twice, I picked him up and hugged him and said "Oh, what a pretty puppy you are" and he snapped at me right in the face! The vet said he was healthy and suggested maybe we could put him to sleep since maybe he had an inherited agression problem. we wouldn't hear of it and changed vets. Our vet now says some dogs just don't like people in their face, but still a boxer should not be this way!!!!! He has always been treated like royalty as are our others here. I just don't get it! He never snaps at me now-he knows I'm boss. He shows a little agression towards us like if we tell him to do something he does not want to do. He has just now developed storm anxiety. Never had it before. (By the way Boomer had storm anxiety starting around age 3 and it went away when we moved here 2 years ago)If we try to make them go potty and the wind is blowing or anything indicative of an approaching storm, he will niot go outside, he will stand real firm, his posture gets all stiff and it really seems as if he is preapred to snap!! We have to lure him out with a treat and it really should not be this way, especially with a boxer! We just try to deal with oit. He is our beloved pet....but....with having kids, I'm not willing to chance him biting my babies, so he has to be outside a lot or either in the kitchen with a baby gate up, which he does very well in. He is confusing-he is very sweet and loving to me, tolerates the kids well, but I just don't trust him enough.
This is a crosspost from The Backyard that I offered to post here for Jen, she is having problems with her Buster (I'm mainly meaning, and concerned about the behavioural stuff, the medical stuff I'm sure will be worked out but suggestions are welcome for that also). Her internet time is limited for reading so I will copy any answers to this and email them so that she can read them off line. Thanks for any in-put on this one.
.....and the below is a follow up post with some more details about Buster......
Thank you so much for your sugesstions!
Other things I can think to add is that Buster is one of four Boxers (newest addition is a pup recently added to their home) and there are two young skinkids in the home and the two adults. If you have questions to ask or need specifics about anything please ask and I will forward them to Jen. Thanks people.
