As Margartet said, you are on the rigth track but it takes time. A pup can be closer to 5 - 6 months before relatively reliably trained. Those books that insist you can housetrain a pup in seven days are a crock... I found that even after my youngest was holding all night, he still would get caught up in playing and forget until it was too late or he started forgetting to find me if he was out of sight and really had to go.
