Posted by Diane on April 8, 2002, 7:25 pm Just what do you do with dogs like these? And lets face it - recall is VITAL for reasons of safety. I was very lucky with Jess, that she was never hit by a car (she was a constant jumper and runner) or shot by a farmer on one occasion. I just read the saddest story about someone who lost a wonderful dog that did on leash competitive obedience but never learnt not to run away given the slightest opportunity - eventually it was hit by a car and killed
Is it possible to train a good, solid, reliable recall for a dog that is a runner? One that is good in many other aspects of its training but not with a recall. The dog in question is (I believe) part german short hair pointer and part springer (spaniel aren't they?). This is just a general query out of curiousity from another board that I look in at from time to time. Actually while I think of it this could apply to Megs too because she is a wonderful dog who I hope to start training for towards competitive obedience very soon but ever since I had that darn rabbit here her prey drive has kicked in Big Time and when she thinks there is a tiny critter (cat, rabbit, duck etc) in her vicinity I can actually watch all the communication ports shut down with her, she draws inwards and listens not at all.
so recall is on my mind. Anyone have anything to contribute on this subject?
