Posted by Kat on June 27, 2002, 12:14 pm I am sure that Diane will have more definite times on how long to feed mush and when to introduce the 'hard stuff'. By 8 weeks tho, the pup should be on hard kibble. Puppy Milk Formula This is used as a supplement if you have to hand-raise, given to the b###h during whelping process, used to wean puppies. It was given to me by Lydia Laycook of Von Rhinegold Kees Kennels who obtained it from [I believe] Michigan State Veterinary University. It is suppose to be as close to b###h milk as possible and produce superior puppies. I have used it since my first litter. I have no complaints! MIX IN BLENDER: A few questions - has your older dog had obedience training? If not I would sign him up immediately. It would give you personal time with him and would reinforce your being the alpha over him [it would also ensure that you are 'talking' to him in language that he understands]. Was he socialized as a pup, has he ever been around many other dogs/pups? The pup is so small he may just be confused, especially if he was not fully socialized as a pup. How does he react around other dogs you meet while walking or at the pet store? For the time being I would ensure that they are never left alone together. Reinforce your older boxer's alpha state over the pup by him eating first, getting first choice of sofa's etc. At this stage the pup should automatically be submissive to the much larger dog. I would also make sure the older dog gets some personal one-on-one time without the pup. If during 'together' time he begins to growl, especially if the hair on his back goes up make it very clear that his agressive behavior is not acceptable [putting him into a down stay would be good at this point].
Danielle, at 4 1/2 weeks your pup is just at the being weaned stage. I would soak her puppy kibble in the mixture below [to a mush stage] and
gradually wean her off of it. Also, make sure the vet knows she was weaned early and abrubtly to make sure she gets any/all vitamins she may have missed from the mom.
(Also good if you have an undernourished dog that is having trouble keeping adult food down initially).
1 Tablespoon Honey
1 Tablespoon Whipping Cream
2 Egg Yolks
1 Can PET (brand) Evaporated Milk
DISSOLVE ON STOVE:
2 Packages Knox (brand) unflavored gelatin
1 Can water
Combine all above together. Add one more can of water. Blend well. Refrigerate. The stuff turns to a "pudding" state, but melts when warmed.
