I'm a friend of the host for this board(Diane) and have been stopping by looking for her actually. Thought maybe I could help you a little until she comes in and advises you. She is great and will know just what you should do!!
Meanwhile....Go to Petsmart and sign up for one of their obedience classes! That should get you off to a great start and the instructor will help you with the behavior problems. He/she can get you on the right path to housetraining this dog. I can definately tell you a BOXER is a wonderful dog to have! They can be stubborn, but are very intelligent and naturally protective of their owners, without overdoing it at all. In my opinion, especially with having 2 little ones, you would not want to try to train Pebbles to be protective. She will naturally want to protect those she loves. I don't know enough about Pitt Bulls to say anything. I understand that when treated well and not encouraged to be mean-never, they can be good pets. I once had a Boxer that we wondered many times if she maybe was mixed with a pitt bull. Many people asked us. But she was supposedly full boxer, AKC registered. She did look a little different than any of our other Boxers-stockier, bigger head and was aggressive. She hated any dog that was not a Boxer. Male or female, if it was not a boxer, she attacked it!!! It was very strange. She was so protective of me that she would literally shake all over in jealousy if any dog wanted my attention. She was very affectionate to me. She almost killed our cocker spaniel many times so we gave her to my mom. We got a german sheppard mix and she almost killed him, too. It was horrible, how mean she would get!!!! We ended up having to put her to sleep because we were afraid she might attack one of our small children. A vet told us when she was only like a year old she should be put to sleep due to her agressiveness. Something just wasn't right with her. We raised her in a good loving home, but something in her wasn't right. Pebbles sounds like a wonderful dog and I think with patience you will work out the potty training issue. It will take hard work and consitency, too. Don't worry about teaching her to be protective of yall, that will come naturally to her. As with any dog of any breed never leave her alone with your children and always observe how she is around them. Good luck! With a training program and diane's advice here, before you know it Pebbles will be potty trained!!
