Posted by MR TWISTER on 2/7/2003, 2:47 am WELL MEANWHILE ME AND THE HAWKEYE BEEN KEEPING AND EYE ON LAST YEARS 8TH GRADE GRADUATES. THEY HAVE BEEN KICKIN' SOME SERIOUS UPPERCLASSMEN BUTT. HERE'S A LITTLE SOMETHING ME AND HAWK PUT TOGETHER FOR ILLINOISWRESTLING GEAR.COM, AND FOR YOU, JUST IN CASE YOU BEEN MISSING OUT. In the wrestling community the 1996 freshmen class is consider the best to date. The current freshmen class of 2003 will probably be considered better. A recent internet poll on Illinois matmen.com confirmed this when over 75% that responded agreed. Most of these kids have been defeating upperclassmen all season long which is unusual. Only time will tell if they are the best ever with regionals, sectionals and state around the corner. Here is a list of these exceptional freshmen in no particular order. Jimmy Kennedy Grant 103; undefeated. 6 kids National championships, 5 kids state titles, multiple kids All American and was once voted the best kids wrestler in the USA. Considered to be the one with the best technique and chance at greatness, which usually equates to 4 high school titles Kennedy should advance to the state tournament easily. Brandon Precin Sandburg 103; has only one loss to Tony Pretto (112 #1) from early in the season before he dropped to 103.Has been on a tear for the last year since winning the 95 pound weight class(considered the toughest weight last year in the IKWF). SICA Blue Champion this season. In the tough Tinley Park sectional where three 103s wont make the BIG trip, dont look for Brandon to be one of those staying home. Ranked # 1Chicago Sun Times Mario Morgan Mt Carmel 103;31-3, won 3 Illinois Kids state titles and multiple kids All American titles. Mario is one of the most athletic and explosive (18 pins) wrestlers in the state. Morgan won the Chicago Catholic League championship this season. Look for a sectional final barn burner at Morton with former Harvey Twisters teammate Thomas Webster of DeLaSalle. Wesley English Mt Carmel; 135, 29-6 Earned Fargo USA freestyle All American honors. The heaviest freshmen to rank consistently all season. Excellent size and technique. Won recent internet(illinoismatmen.com) poll as the freshmen of the year. Wesley wrestles more upperclassmen then most other freshmen which makes his record even more impressive. Brian Martin Montini (A); 103, has defeated more class AA wrestlers then any other class A freshman. Brian has impressive size and strength. Consistently ranked in the top 3 class A wrestlers all season look for him to be in the state final. Dalton Bullard Belvedere; 103, 28-1, Very strong and good mat wrestler, Only loss to a Jeff Carney (soph.) in the Geneseo championship. A regional title at Rockton could setup a nice championship with Senior Kyle Anderson on Bullards home mat at the Belvedere sectional. Brian Spangler Nequea Valley; 103, Great size and technique. Brian is capable of pulling off several upsets downstate. National place winner on kids level and kids state champion. Anyone looking past Brian is making a serious mistake. Phil Lukanich Lyons; 103, Quietly picking up wins, Phil is quick on his feet and comes from a good wrestling family. His technique is solid and look for him to surprise come sectional time. A first place in the LaGrange regional should put Phil in position to battle the states top soph., 103 Nick Fanthorpe in sectionals for the title Kyle Hutter Providence; 103, solid size and technique. Strong. Chicago Catholic League runner up to Morgan for the 6 times state champion Celtics. Could upset someone in the sectional. Kyle is in probably the toughest sectional for 103s at Tinley. His size and technique could put him in position to make the trip to Champaign. Chris Weisengerber Glenbard North; 103, Solid wrestler. Won key match against nationally ranked Apple Valley, Minnesota to help his team win The Clash tournament. Look for Chris to advance to the state tournament with a possible matchup with the top soph. 103 Nick Fanthorpe of Naperville North in the sectional or Phil Lukanich of Lyons . OTHERS TO WATCH:
