I am a private college admissions coach, and some of my clients have been wrestlers.
The truth of the matter is that D-1 full scholarships for wrestlers are few and far between, and probably getting rarer.
One famous coach at a famous D-1 school told me that you don't get a scholarship until you crack the starting lineup and AA.
Another told me that if you get a scholarship to wrestle 141, that's where you wrestle forever, as the school allocated that money for that slot. You may still wrestle if you get bigger at this particular school, but it will be without a scholarship.
Bottom line is it's a business, and wrestlers/parents need to approach it as one.
There are essentially two types of scholarships. One is called "merit" based--i.e. academic and athletic merit. The other is called need-based.
D-3 schools cannot give athletic merit based scholarships. but they can --and do-- give need-based money, especially to athletes who they feel would benefit their programs. of course, to get need-based money, you have to show need.
I hope this information helps.
