Ben Askren

I know it's a really random question, but I have no idea where else to post it. I was reading about Ben Askren and it said he took 2nd as a HS Frosh (1999), state champ as a soph (2000) and a junior (2001), but just qualified for states as a senior (2001). No mention of placing. What the heck happened?
