Your cat will have the habit of going outside but if you want too you can re-train it - might need a spray bottle to be near the back door to give a little squirt if it tries gate crashing.....or ...........why not build an enclosure that is accessible from a window to the house. There is a great section on enclosures on this site here - http://www.catsofaustralia.com/cat-enclosures.htm and you can download a book of instructions on how to cat proof your back yard here - http://www.geelongaustralia.com.au/library/pdf/5194/33.pdf Enclosures don't have to be expensive and can be portable even if you are renting so that you can take it with you.
