Eight added to Tuscarawas County Old Timers Hall Of Fame
The Cy Young Tuscarawas County Old-Timers Baseball Assn. Hall of Fame has grown by eight.
A total of eight new members were inducted into the Hall during the organization’s annual banquet Sunday at the McDonald Marlite Center.
Inducted were Tim Mullet, Ken Wohlheter, Dave Kiser, Gerald “Bud” Yakley, Gene Ford, Greg Puntenney, Marvin Croy and Vinny D. Maculaitis Jr.
Here is a brief capsule on the inductees:
Tim Mullet – He has a long history of baseball in the area. Mullet played Little League at Belden Brick and Pony League for Sugarcreek. He was a three-time MVP at Garaway High and played on an 18-and-under Hamsher Insurance softball team that won the State National ASA Jr. Olympic Championship. At Malone College, he broke the school’s single season batting average record by hitting .442 as a freshman.
Mullet had a long history of involvement with the Class A league, starting with the Sugarcreek Merchants as a 16 year-old. He played for several years for Gnadenhutten S-F, helping the team to a pair of league titles and five tournament championships. He won batting titles in 1987 (.505) and 1994 (.554). He returned to Sugarcreek, a team later sponsored by Kaufman Realty, and remained as a player-manager until 2004 and he stayed with the team through 2005. The Sugarcreek teams won four league titles in that time. Mullet won another batting title in 2002 and was the league’s MVP in 1998.
Ken Wohlheter – A graduate of Fairless High, Wohlheter played four years at Fairless at playing Little League for Wilmot and Hot Stove at Beach City. He was the Falcons’ leading hitter in 1967 and a first-team Federal League pick. He was also a first-team All-Ohio pick that year and helped Fairless to a spot in the regional tournament. Wohlheter played Class A baseball for Wilmot in the Tuscarawas County League from 1966-73, where he had a six-year average of .330. The team won the league tournament in 1968. In the Class A Canton league, he played two years for Timken as a center fielder.
Dave Kiser – Known as “Mr. Reliable,” the Dover resident was a Pony League All-Star for the Hick’s Roofing team and went on to win Eastern District awards as a standout defensive player at New Philadelphia. He played in the Class A league for Pissocra-Mathias and Uhrichsville Moose, winning the league’s MVP award in 1999 and the Service Award in 1997.
Gerald “Bud” Yakley – He was a four-year letterman at Garaway High, graduating in 1962. Yakley’s baseball career was based in his hometown of Sugarcreek. He played for Belden Brick in the Tri-County Little League and managed Garaway’s Little League team for three years in the 1980’s. He played Legion for Sugarcreek for two years before playing in the adult leagues. He played for Sugarcreek Parks for three years when Sugarcreek was in the Tri-County League. He played Class A for the Sugarcreek Merchants in the 1960’s.
Gene Ford – A standout as an all-around athlete, Ford played for Midvale High and then Indian Valley North before graduating. He later played shortstop for Bonvechio’s in the Class A league. He was mostly noted for his basketball career, earning Little College All-American honors at Muskingum College before a basketball Hall of Fame coaching career at Cambridge. He is currently the men’s basketball coach at Muskingum College.
Greg Puntenney – A graduate of Canton McKinley, where he was an All-Ohio catcher and team MVP in 1985, Puntenney played in the Class A league for New Philadelphia Moose and New Philadelphia VFW. Known as a great offensive and defensive catcher, he also played in the Class A league in Canton.
Marvin A. Croy – A Dover High graduate, Croy was a varsity first baseman at Dover after playing 10 years in the youth league system at Dover, developing into a Pony League All-Star. He later played for the Tuscarawas Indians in the Roy Hobbs League, serving as a player-manager from 200-2005 and moving to a 48-and-over league after that.
Vinny D. Maculaitis Jr. – A high school career at Central Catholic and Claymont led to a 15-year career in the Class A league, playing for Uhrichsville Moose. He was a four-year player at Walsh University. Maculaitis played five years for Dennison Little League, three years in the Uhrichsville-Dennison Senior Division and three years in the Canton Hot Stove league.
