The Lady Cats topped the Indian Creek Redskins tonight by a 3-1 score in the OVAC quarterfinal game at Diamond 4. They will move on to the semi-final action in Wheeling on Thursday at 6:30, playing the winner of the Edison-John Marshall game being played tonight at Edison.
Paige Young picked up her 13th win for the Cats, striking out 5, walking 2 and giving up just 2 hits.
Creek pitcher Lizzy Williamson kept the Cats off balance through the first three innings, allowing just 2 baserunners on walks. In the third, Lacie Mahley led off with a single up the middle, Janelle Givens drew a walk and Megan Tharp singled to score Mahley. A throwing error by the Creek catcher allowed Givens to score and Tharp came home on a ground-out by Chanel Ford. Cambridge threatened again in the 5th with a single by Taryn Payton and walk to Carly Kehn, but a ground out and line drive double play ended the inning.
Young allowed one walk in the 5th and another in the 6th, but Indian Creek made it interesting in the 7th. After the lead-off batter struck out, the number four batter launched a long fly ball to right which popped out of the glove of Megan Tharp as she sprinted to make the play. A single to left by the next batter was followed by a ground-out. With runners at second and third, the batter singled to right-center, bringing in the lead runner. Creek gambled and tried to bring in the runner from second but Janelle Givens threw a strike to catcher Carly Kehn who tagged the runner out at the plate, ending the game.
Cambridge moves to 17-1 on the season and will host Claymont tomorrow night in a contest originally scheduled for tonight. Game time is 5:00pm.
