It took a few extra nerve-wracking innings, but the Lady Cats came out on top of the Edison Wildcats tonight by a score of 3-2. Paige Young picked up her 14th win, giving up 4 hits, 2 walks and striking out 6 batters.
Young and the Cambridge defense put the visitors down in order in the first, then got right to business as Sarah Starr tripled to left and came home on a wild pitch. Starr walked in the third and scored again on a single by Janelle Givens.
Edison put two runs on the board in the 4th to tie the game with a single, walk, single and a double steal that allowed the second runner to score.
Cambridge threatened again in the bottom of the 4th with 2 outs as Chanel Ford reached on an error and Sarah Starr singled. Maggie Starr singled and Ford was caught between third and home and was tagged out to end the inning.
The Cats had another 2-out rally going in the bottom of the 7th. After 2 strikeouts, Lacie Mahley doubled to left and Janelle Givens was intentionally walked. Megan Tharp drilled a line shot that was headed into right field but the ball hit Givens in the leg and ended the threat.
Edison put two runners on with one out in the top of the 8th on two back-to-back singles, but Young coaxed an infield fly and ground out to set them down.
In the bottom of the 9th with one out, Sarah Starr hit a single into right field that got past the fielder and ended with Starr on third base. Maggie Starr hit the game-winning single to send Sarah Starr home and end the game.
For Cambridge Maggie Starr had 3 singles and the game-winning RBI, Sarah Starr had a triple, 2 singles and scored all of the Cats' runs. Megan Tharp had 2 singles, Janelle Givens had a single and RBI, Lacie Mahley doubled and Paige Young singled.
The Cats will play Wheeling Park in the finals to be played on Saturday at 10:30am at the I-470 complex. Cambridge will be looking to revenge their earlier loss to the Patriots. Cambridge is scheduled to play cross-county rival Meadowbrook tomorrow night in Byesville with game time 5pm.
