The Lady Cats picked up two firsts in school history today - OVAC champions and 20 wins - as they topped Wheeling Park 9-3 in the OVAC Championship game in Wheeling. Paige Young gave up 7 hits, struck out 4, hit one batter and allowed 2 walks in picking up her 15th win of the season.
Cambridge went down 1-2-3 in the top of the first and the Patriots put 3 runs on the board in their half. The first batter walked, the next two singled to load the bases and a fielder's choice erased the lead-off to keep them loaded. A sacrifice fly scored one and a single by the next batter scored 2 more. That would prove to be the end of Park's scoring for the day.
Cambridge came back in the second as Janelle Givens reached on an error and came home on an error that allowed Megan Tharp to reach base. A sacrifice bunt and strikeout followed, then Taryn Payton singled. An errant throw by the catcher trying to catch Payton stealing second allowed Tharp to score.
Park threatened in their half of the 2nd as their first batter was hit by a pitch. Following a ground out, the next batter singled and a fielder's choice erased the first runner at the plate. Following a walk, the lead runner attempted to score on a passed ball but catcher Carly Kehn made the throw to Young covering to tag the runner out at the plate.
Cambridge tied the game in the 4th as Alexa Kafury launched a two-out double (the only extra base hit of the day) to center and scored on Young's single.
In the 6th inning, Lacie Mahley opened with a single and Givens and Tharp both reached on errors to load the bases. Mahley was erased at the plate on a fielder's choice by Kafury to keep the bases loaded. Coach Shepard called for the squeeze play and Young put down a perfect bunt as Givens scampered home. With the bases still loaded, Park pitcher Mary Hohman recorded a strikeout for the second out. Kehn sent a single to center that scored two, followed by Sarah Starr's single that scored one more. Maggie Starr reached on an error that allowed another Cambridge run to score. Cambridge led by a score of 8-3.
Cambridge added another run in the 7th as Givens led off with a single and ended up at 3rd base on an errant throw. She scored on Tharp's ground-out.
Park's half of the 7th started with a pop out to first base, then the next batter reached on the only Cambridge error of the game. The next batter grounded out to Mahley at first, who alertly threw to second base to end the game on a spectacular double-play, Cambridge's second d.p. of the game.
The Patriots committed 7 errors in the game and 6 of those errors had a direct impact on runs scoring for Cambridge.
