Meadowbrook boys take second at D-II districts Lady Colts take fifth; slew of local competitors advance to regional meet action

BYESVILLE --Last week over 1300 student-athletes started their journey in Division II boys' and girls' track. By the end of the day Saturday, a select few had stamped their tickets to the regional meet.

"We ran really well today." commented Meadowbrook's John Epperson. "We wanted to win the team title, and I knew it would all come down to the 4x400. You can always second guess some of your decisions, but it's a part of competition." Epperson went on, "I'm really proud because we did really well today. We knew it would be tough because Steubenville, Cambridge, and Union Local were going to be tough to beat. As the meet went on, some things fell into place and other things didn't. All the kids did well and I am really proud."
Meadowbrook's Taylor Hunt took second in both the 100 (11.52) and 200 (22.86), while winning the 400 (49.88) to advance in three solo events. Keifer Watson moved to the Regional meet in the 200 with a 23.24, and scored some points for the Colts in the 100, taking eighth in 12.07. The 4x400 team was second with a 3.30.55, finishing second to Steubenville, who won in 3:25.4 to seal the victory. Shawn Light won the pole vault with a vault of 15-03, beating his teammate Nathan Milton, who also advanced with his second place finish on a jump of 14-00.
The Colts' 4x200 team placed eighth with a time of 1:40.99. Jeremy Quinn and Matt Calihan both garnered points in the high jump, as Quinn was fifth with a 5-08, and Calihan was tied for eighth with a 5-06.
Cambridge's Thomas Norris won the 100 with a time of 11.33 to qualify for regionals. Deshaun Lewis won the 200 with a time of 22.75 and just fell short of advancing in the 100, finishing fifth in 11.69. The Bobcats' 4x200 team won with a time of 1:30.72. Tim Fox moved on for the 'Cats, finishing fourth in the pole vault with an 11-00. Shawn Hannon also punched a pair of tickets for the Regional Meet, taking third in the shot out (47.10-00) and fourth in the Discus (133-09).
Robert Baldwin was seventh in the 200 with a 24.15, and the 4x800 squad got the Bobcats on the board with an eighth place finish (9:43.67). Greg Fox took eighth in the Pole Vault, jumping 10-00.
John Glenn's 4x800 team moved on, finishing second with a time of 8:32.88. Cy Hummel also advanced, tying for second in the high jump with a 5-08. Haven Holdcroft was third in the long jump, leaping 19-11.75 to punch his ticket to the Regional meet.
The Muskies 4x400 team finished sixth with a time of 3:37.73. Tyler Bosson and Austin Ross both placed in the pole vault, as Bosson was fifth (10-06) and Ross was seventh (10-06). Jake Ratliffe also scored points for John Glenn, taking fifth in the shot (45.07.5) and sixth in the discus (125.03).
"We are awfully young," commented Muskies coach Doug Joy. "I honestly feel we are a year away, so I am pleased so far. Next year we will be even more competitive because everyone will be back for the most part. Our girls are doing what they can, we just don't really have the horses to score in these events. We run really well, but this is somewhere that everyone runs well."
Barnesville had two advance to the Regional, as Brennan Delaney was second in the 1600 with a 4:37.17, and he also scored for the 'Rocks, finishing sixth in the 800 (2:06.87). Darius Jenkins also advanced in the Shot with a throw of 50-08. Wesley Lewis was sixth in the 1600, running a 4:46.75, and Kody Crooks was fifth in the 3200 with a time of 11:03.94.
St. Clairsville's Alex Thornburg was victorious in the 1600 and 3200 with times of 4:36.33 and 10:18.71, respectively. Cedric Robinson won the 800 for Martins Ferry with a time of 2:01.48, while teammate Anthony Phillips won the 300 hurdles with a time of 40.92. Sage Cutri was the winner of the 110 hurdles for Steubeville, running a 15.23, and the Big Red 4x100 team won the in 43.86. Cambridge was in the running, however they were disqualified after dropping the baton during an exchange. St. Clairsville won the 4x800 by more than four and a half seconds, running an 8:31.2.
In the field, Bobby Spence won the High Jump for Buckeye Local with a 6-00 jump, besting second by four inches.

Meadowbrook's Mara Cain won the 100 Hurdles (15.68) and the 300 Hurdles (45.09) to punch her ticket to regionals, while The Lady Colts' 4x200 team also advanced, winning in 1:46.93.
Darien Singleton finished seventh in the 300 hurdles for the Colts with a 48.78 and eighth in the 100, running a 13.52. The 4x400 team captured seventh in 4:21.96. Kelly Delancey was fifth in the pole vault, jumping to a mark of 9-06 and Lacey Kirkman finished fifth in the long jump with a 15-08.
For the Lady Bobcats, Katie Faucett moved on to the Regional meet, winning the long jump by nearly half a foot, leaping 16-07.25. Katie Davis moved on as well, taking third in the high jump with a 5-02.
Janelle Lowery placed eighth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.82. The 4x100 team was just short, finishing sixth in 52.4, and the 4x200 team was eighth in 1:52.3.
"I was real pleased with how we performed today," stated coach Tracy Fox. "We ended strong with our times, and we improved. We recorded our best times in the relay today."
"It is nice to have a champion with Faucett, and it was nice for Davis to qualify for regionals for the third time in her career. It was also nice to score in the running events," Fox said. "We are really young and will have almost everyone come back next year. Katie Lewis had struggled some, but she through the qualifying rounds, and I think next year she will make it further."
John Glenn received points from the efforts of Emily Bates, who tied for sixth in the High Jump with a 5-00 leap, and Kelli Brock finished fifth in the discus, chucking the disc 33-04.5.
St. Clairsville's Alexis Campbell won the 100 (12.64), while Indian Valley's Kayla Caldwell took the 200 with a time of 26.22. Arabia Littlejohn of Steubenville (58.58) was the winner of the 400 and Claymont's Aubriann Roush won the 800 in 2:20.72. Kelly Perzanowski won the 1600 for St. Clairsville by nearly four seconds with a time of 5:09.56, while Sherry Borsos was equally as dominant in the 3200, running an 11:25.82 to win by 18 seconds. Indian Valley's 4x100 team was victorious with a 50.27 , while the Lady Devils of St. Clairsville won the 4x400 in 4:07.31 and the 4x800 in 9:56.15.
For field events, Harrison Central's Erika Skinner won the high jump, leaping 5-03 and Kayla Caldwell was victorious in the pole vault with a park of 11-06. Katie Sidwell won the Shot Put (35-11.75) and Discus (112-01).
NEXT--The Regional Track Meet will be held at Meadowbrook High. Opening rounds Thursday at 4 p.m. and final rounds commence Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
