BYESVILLE -- The final tickets to next weekend's state track meet were punched in Division II on Saturday at Meadowbrook High.
Six athletes added their names to the list of Thursday qualifiers, as did two local relay teams.
Leading the group of local qualifiers was Meadowbrook's Mara Cain.
The sophomore took first in the 300 hurdles (45.17) and ran a personal best time of 14.97 to finish second in the 100 hurdles.
"Mara had a great day," Meadowbrook coach John Epperson said. "She ran a career best in the 100 and ran close to her best in the 300 to move on. She just went out there and really did a great job today. She's got a really strong chance next weekend in the 300. Most of the girls in that race are very comparable. When you get to that level, it's about who does the best that day. The rest of the season really doesn't matter."
Cain contributed on all 28 of the Lady Colts' points, leading them to a sixth-place team finish.
Gallia Academy won the meet with 82 points, followed by St. Clairsville with 53, Granville with 46, Indian Valley with 38 and Steubenville with 29.
Lacey Kirkman, Mekenzi Gray and Mercedes Taylor will join Cain in Columbus next weekend after the quartet combined to win the 4x200 relay in a time of 1:46.43.
"I'm proud of the girls for coming out and getting the regional championship in the relay," Epperson said.
The Cambridge girls team finished 19th overall with 12 points, led by junior Katie Davis.
Davis took second in the high jump on Thursday with a height of 5-02 to advance.
Kate Fausett fell just short of qualifying in the long jump, placing fifth with a distance of 16-10 to round out scoring for Cambridge.
The highlight of the day in girls' action came in the final event, the 4x400.
Granville (4:05.65) passed St. Clairsville just before the finish line, followed by a hard charging Steubenville squad and the Lady Tornadoes of Dover.
The four teams were neck and neck, finishing within .34 seconds of one another.
Additional winners on the girls' side included: Granville in the 4x800 (9:40.44); Jordan Aldridge of Proctorville in the 100 hurdles (14.91); Alexis Campbell of St. Clairsville in the 100 (12.71); Kelly Perzanowski of St. Clairsville in the 1600 (5:12.31); Indian Valley in the 4x100 (50.27); Arabia Littlejohn of Steubenville in the 400 (57.61); Alyvia Clark of Logan Elm in the 800 (2:19.53); Kara Jackson of Gallia Academy in the 200 (25.41); Anna Lamb of Granville in the 3200 (11:26.46); Allie Troester of Gallia Academy in the discus (123-10); Keely Drabick of Edison in the high jump (5-02); Ericka Leighty of South Point in the long jump (17-03); Heather Evans of Logan Elm in the shot put (39-10) and Kayla Caldwell of Indian Valley in the pole vault (11-0).
Four Meadowbrook boys advanced to the state meet to lead the Colts to a fifth-place team finish.
River View took the overall title with a score of 56.5, followed by Dover with 50.5, Circleville with 43, Piketon with 42, Meadowbrook with 37 and Cambridge with 30. Barnesville was 25th with nine point, while John Glenn finished 30th with seven points.
Jason German led the Colts' charge today, placing second in the shot put with a distance of 52-10.
Taylor Hunt took third in the 400 meters with a time of 50.07 to advance to state.
The duo joins Thursday qualifiers Nathan Milton and Shawn Light at the state meet next weekend.
Milton took first in the pole vault with a height of 14-03, while Light took third in the event with a height of 13-06.
"German threw a personal best today which was outstanding," Epperson said. "Our kids have a legit shot next weekend. It's a new meet next weekend. Anything can happen. We've gone into the state meet with the 16th best time in an event and finished fourth. You never know what's going to happen there. We just have to come out and do our best."
Colts who scored but did not qualify included Kiefer Watson (23.15) and Hunt (24.04), who took fifth and eighth in the 200 meters and the 4x400 relay team of Watson, Hunt, Jake Black and Jeremy Quinn, which took eighth (3:38.23).
"We didn't really run our greatest race today in the 4x400," Epperson said. "Taylor did quite a bit of running today and the guys just came out a little bit flat."
Thomas Norris led the way for Cambridge, placing second in the 100 meters (11.22) and third in the long jump (21-02) to advance.
Norris also qualified in the 4x200 relay, joining Mitchell Eagleson, Robert Baldwin and DeShaun Lewis to place second in a time of 1:30.96.
Lewis advanced in the 200 meters later in the day, taking second with a time of 22.86.
Barnesville's Brennan Delaney will return to Columbus for the second time this year.
The All-Ohio cross country runner took fourth in the 1600 in a time of 4:28.27.
The Shamrocks just missed qualifying in the shot put as Darius Jenkins' throw of 49-03 left him in fifth place.
John Glenn freshman Zach Geiger just missed qualifying in the 3200 meters, placing fifth with a time of 9:57.61.
"Zach's mom is his distance coach and she did a great job of convincing him he could run with the front pack," John Glenn coach Doug Joy said. "We pulled him out of the 1600 because we wanted to give him the best chance possible to move on and I feel we did that. Zach topped his personal best by 20 seconds today. To come out as a freshman and do that in a big meet is pretty impressive."
Haven Holdcroft took sixth in the long jump on Thursday for the Muskies with a distance of 20-03.
Controversy struck in the meet's final event, the boys' 4x400 relay.
With Dover, Indian Valley and Chillicothe in firm possession of the top three positions, runners from Fairfield Union and Piketon entangled with both falling and Union Local surpassing to grab the final qualification spot.
Officials conferred for several minutes following the event, eventually making the decision to have the fourth through eighth place teams run again.
The ruling was met with strong protest from Union Local coaches after it was determined that none of the officials along the track had actually seen an infraction take place.
After a 30-minute rest period, Fairfield Union captured the fourth spot to join Dover (3:23.03), Indian Valley and Chillicothe in the state meet.
The Jets finished fifth in the do-over and plan to protest the decision.
Other event winners included: Circleville in the 4x800 relay (8:02.43); Coty Cochran of River View in the 110 hurdles (14.92) and 100 meters (11.15); Dover in the 4x200 (1:30.29); Brad Liston of Circleville in the 1600 (4:24.39); River View in the 4x100 (43.45); Isaac Beverly of Chillicothe in the 400 (49.84); Cory DeChiara of Dover in the 300 hurdles (38.68); Sean Jones of Indian Valley in the 800 (1:55.98); Keiffer Reed of Piketon in the 200 (22.57); Cory Dotts of Claymont in the 3200 (9:48.50); Cabbott Harmon of Philo in the discus (147-04); Lukas Morris of Ironton in the high jump (6-06); Brant Schonaeur of River View in the long jump (21-06) and Mason Metts of Meigs in the shot put (53-10).
