CHS junior Katie Davis captured the D-II state championship and All-Ohio honors in the high jump at the OHSAA 35th annual girls' state championships at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on the campus of Ohio State University this weekend.
On Friday morning, Davis claimed the Division II championship and All-Ohio status in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 4 inches, becoming only the second CHS female athlete to win a state championship. The other was Ashley Dunigan in the 1600-meter run in 2002. Davis qualified for the state meet for three consecutive years, finishing 11th in the high jump last year with a leap of 5-2.
There were four jumpers that reached the 5-4 height, but Davis claimed the championship due to fewer misses in reaching that height.
"I am ecstatic," Cambridge coach Tracy Fox exclaimed. "It all came together for her at the right time and she did everything she needed to do. She made every height on her first jump until the 5-4 height where she had one miss. All the others had more misses which is what gave her the championship. They began the competition with a height of 4-10 which gave her an easy jump to start with and helped her relax and gain confidence.
"She kept her composure and handled the pressure well," Fox added. "She has put in a lot of hard work and wanted this desperately. Hopefully, we will be back there next year again."
With the 10 team points for a first-place finish, Davis led the Lady Bobcats to a five-way tie for 17th place in Division II with 10 points.
On the boys side the Bobcats garnered three team points, with senior Thomas Norris claiming sixth place in the long jump with a leap of 22 feet, 1.5 inches after he finished 10th last year with a jump of 20-9.75. Norris also ran a 11.18 in the preliminary round of the 100-meter dash, but failed to qualify for the finals. Freshman DeShaun Lewis turned in a 22.84 in the 200-meter dash preliminaries Friday, but failed to qualify for Saturday's finals.
The 4x200-meter relay team of Norris, Lewis, Mitchell Eagleson and Robert Baldwin had the 15th best time in preliminaries (1:33.05), but failed to qualify for the finals.
"It was a very satisfying meet for Thomas," Cambridge coach Dan Oswald said. "His jump was about a three-inch personal best for him and in last year's meet would have placed him second. For some reason Division II this year was a very difficult state meet. I am definitely pleased with his performance and he also turned in a personal best time in the preliminaries of the 100-meter but didn't qualify for the final.
"He did what he needed to do," Oswald added, "but for some unknown reason this was an unbelievably difficult meet. Lewis ran well and this was a real learning experience for him. He had the defending state champion two lanes away from him in the preliminaries and he (Rufus Walls) went on to repeat as state champion. Lewis is just getting started and has three more years to build on."
What we allow, we encourage.
