West Virginia upends Ohio 6-3 in OVAC Softball All-Star Game
JEFF HARRISON/The Daily Jeffersonian
ELM GROVE, W.Va. -- On an evening more suited for mid-November football, West Virginia put together two solid innings at the plate and it proved to be enough for a 6-3 victory over Ohio in the annual OVAC Softball All-Star Game at Lisa's Field in the I-470 Complex on Wednesday.
West Virginia tallied two runs in the first inning and tacked on a four-run sixth frame while Ohio managed single runs in the third, sixth and seventh innings.
In the opening inning, Shelby Wilson of John Marshall reached on an error to start the game and then after two outs, John Marshall's Dee Gamble delivered an RBI single to plate her teammate.
An RBI single by Paden City's Vicki Yurisko followed to drive in Gamble and West Virginia was on top, 2-0.
Ohio got one back in the third on a two-out single by Melissa Costantini of Steubenville Catholic; an error and an RBI single by Alyson Derenburger of Beaver Local.
The Buckeyes evened the score at 2-2 in the top of the sixth when Cambridge's Taryn Payton beat out a bunt single; moved to second on a sacrifice by Lady Bobcat teammate Lacie Mahley and stole third before scoring on an RBI single by Karlie Davis of Monroe Central.
West Virginia countered with a four-spot in the bottom of the sixth, starting with an infield single by Kaitlyn Goudy of Tyler Consolidated. After an out, JM's Gamble reached on an error and Yurisko walked to load the bases, setting the stage for a big bases-clearing double by Corinne Murdock of Magnolia.
Janet Peterson of Cameron then plated Murdock with an RBI single to give the Mountain State girls a 6-2 upperhand.
Ohio cut the gap to 6-3 in the seventh on a walk to Kelly Costantini of Steubenville Catholic; a single by her twin sister Melissa and an RBI single by Monroe Central's Davis, but that was the final run of the night.
Five pitchers shared mound duty for West Virginia -- Megan Byhanna of Linsly, Erin Shuman of Oak Glen, Goudy of Tyler, Sarah Blazer of Bishop Donahue and Gamble of John Marshall. They combined for 10 strikeouts and one walk.
Ohio pitchers Melissa Costantini of Steubenville Catholic, Sara Pelegreen of Harrison Central, Bendle of Edison and Lizzy Williamson of Indian Creek teamed for 15 Ks and one free pass.
The only other West Virginia hit was a single by Laken Drake of John Marshall.
Other Ohio hits came from Cambridge's Mahley, Barnesville's Sam Jefferis, Fort Frye's Danielle Lang, Union Local's Rachel Stahl and River's Erika Williams.
Player of the Year awards were presented to Angela Johnson of Wheeling Park (4-A), Kinsi Tellep of Meadowbrook (3-A), Melissa Costantini of Steubenville Catholic (2-A) and Kerri Jo Thomas of Beallsville (1-A).
The Coach of the Year award went to Mark Witzberger of Cameron.
What we allow, we encourage.
