Usually when you spot a team a six run lead things do not end well. This was not the case Monday at Don Coss Field, as the Cambridge Bobcats used a four-run fifth to get back within striking distance of New Philadelphia, then a five-run sixth to put the Quakers away, 9-6.
The win put Cambridge at 24-7 overall, but more importantly brought them to 10-2 in the East Central Ohio League, tying Dover for the league title — the first in school history for Cambridge.
“We spotted them six runs, then fought back to 6-4 and scored five in the sixth. Battling back has been our trademark lately,” commented Cambridge coach Dave Gray. “We battled, hung in there, and came alive in the fifth. Timmy (Harvey) pitched another outstanding game and (Tyler) Hardesty hit the ball really hard. (Kyle) Cox hit the ball to get us started and that got the rally going.”
When asked about the league title, Gray commented, “I’m awful happy. We took a tough loss in the regional, so to come back and win the league title, the kids were very deserving. It was a good way for the seniors to go out, and they set a mile mark for next year’s team.”
The Quakers (16-13, 9-5 ECOL) jumped out quickly to a 3-0 lead after the first taking advantage of some timely Bobcat errors and tacked on another inning in the second and third. One more run in the fifth set the Quakers up 6-0, but in the bottom of the fifth the ’Cats’ bats came to life. After Kyle Cox walked, Dillon Van Dyne hit a one-out double to place runners on second and third. Winston Turner then laced one into left-center to score Cox and Van Dyne. Harvey then scored Turner on a single to right, and after Zach Freeman reached first on a fielder’s choice, he was scored by Tyler Hardesty.
Harvey pitched out of a jam in the sixth with runners on second and third, then Cambridge put the game away.
Cox reached first with one out on an error and was lifted for pinch runner Steve Harris. Tyler Ford then walked and Van Dyne hit a bloop single to right center to load the bases. Turner followed by lacing one to the pitcher, but the throw home for the force out was low allowing Harris to score, and the ball was kicked away letting Ford score the tying run. Harvey then hit a sac fly to deep center, scoring Van Dyne. Freeman singled and Hardesty ripped a triple to right center, scoring Turner and Freeman for the 9-6 lead.
After allowing a single, Harvey struck out two and forced a ground out to win the game.
Harvey improved to 10-2 on the season, striking out eight and walking none. He also helped his cause at the plate with a double, single, and two RBI.
Hardesty had a triple and a double with three RBI, while Van Dyne had two singles. Turner added a single and two RBI.
John Stevenson took the loss for New Philly, striking out one and walking one in limited action. He also led the Quakers bats with a double and two singles.
Will McEwan added a double and a single, while Max Price added two singles and two RBI.
What we allow, we encourage.
