Cambridge's Mahley to play softball at West Liberty U.
Jeff Harrison/The Daily Jeffersonian
Versatile Lacie Mahley -- a mainstay on the Cambridge High softball team for the last four years -- will continue her academic and athletic careers at West Liberty University in the fall.
Mahley put up solid numbers all four seasons with the Lady Bobcats, capped by a senior season which included a .394 batting average with 26 hits, 22 RBI and 15 runs scored. She also had an impressive .989 fielding percentage as the team's shortstop, helping the Bobcats post a 19-6 overall record, including a tie for second in the East Central Ohio League and a spot in the OVAC Class 4-A semifinals.
For her efforts, Mahley was named first team all-Eastern District Division II, all-OVAC Class 4-A and all-ECOL. She will play in both the OVAC and Eastern District all-star games.
As a junior, Mahley hit .330 with 22 RBI and gained second team all-Eastern District recognition as part of the CHS squad which posted a school-record 25 wins, won the OVAC Class 4-A Tournament and the D-II Sectional.
Mahley also had an impact early-on, hitting .380 with 30 hits and 19 RBI as a freshman when the 'Cats were OVAC 4-A runner-up and then batting .280 with 10 RBI as a sophomore when CHS advanced all the way to the OHSAA Division II Regional Tournament.
"Lacie is very coachable," said Cambridge softball coach Bob Shepard. "She will do anything you ask and she's the kind of player you want to come through your system.
"She's a very personable kid and we're going to miss her," he added.
Shepard said Mahley was equally adept on both offense and defense.
"She's always going to make contact at the plate," he related. "She only had two strikeouts all season and probably less than 14 for her entire career.
"If it wasn't for Sarah," the CHS coach offered, referring to 2008 graduate Sarah Starr, currently at Kent State University, "she would have been our starting shortstop for four years (Mahley played first base until this season). She has the ability to play anywhere in the infield and she can catch or play the outfield, too. She had a career fielding percentage of .987. The only thing she never did for us was pitch."
Shepard also pointed out that Mahley, along with fellow seniors Taryn Payton and Megan Tharp, were part of the winningest softball group at CHS (82 victories), and that she's the fifth player he's had advance to the collegiate level, joining Tasha Mattis, Danielle Shepard, Janelle Givens and Starr.
The daughter of Adeana and Joe Mahley, Lacie plans to major in nursing at West Liberty.
What we allow, we encourage.
