Cambridge girl booters return solid, veteran cast

Experience is the name of the game for the Cambridge High girls' soccer team this fall.
With a roster of only 15 players, coach Tim Carr must rely on a deep pool of returning starters to improve on last season's 6-10-1 mark (2-6 ECOL).
"We don't have a lot of girls this season," Carr said, "but the girls we do have are very good and bring a lot of experience to the field."
The Lady Bobcats must replace a trio of seniors from last season, including forward Taryn Payton.
Payton was named first-team all-East Central Ohio League, second-team all-Eastern District and first-team all-Ohio Valley Athletic Conference.
"Taryn was an outstanding forward who could really play anywhere on the field for us if we wanted her to," Carr said.
Backups Sarah Price and Tabby Johnson also graduated for Cambridge.
"Sarah and Tabby were great to have around last year," Carr said. "They always helped lift the spirits of the team and were key to our chemistry last year. They will be missed."
Leading the squad this season are a trio of senior captains that bring a combined nine years of experience to the field.
Forward/center midfielder Ashley Carr leads the way for Cambridge.
Carr was named first team all-ECOL, first team all-Eastern District and first team all-OVAC last season.
"She's been great up front for us the last few years," Coach Carr said. "She passes well, she scores well and she knows where to be. She's a big part of our offense."
Anchoring the back line is stopper Sarah Herman.
Herman was named all-OVAC honorable mention last season and is also entering her fourth year of varsity competition.
"Sarah is a workhorse for us," Carr said. "She plays every minute of every game and really helps solidify the defense."
Rounding out the trio is goalkeeper Paige Carpenetti.
Carpenetti was named all-ECOL and all-Eastern District honorable mention last season and brings a wealth of significance to the Lady Bobcats' last line of defense.
"Paige is an outstanding goalie," Carr said. "She's not afraid to dive or jump or get dirty to keep the ball out of the goal. She's exactly what you would ask for in a keeper."
The team's fourth captain is junior center midfielder Emily Messino.
Messino is a two-year letterwinner who garnered second-team all-ECOL and all-Eastern District honorable mention accolades last season.
"Emily has more speed than she knows what to do with," Carr said. "She has good awareness in the middle of the field and does an exceptional job getting the ball up front to our scorers."
Other returners for Cambridge include juniors Abby Wetherell and Molly Ritz.
Wetherell received all-Eastern District honorable mention accolades last year at right fullback while Ritz was named all-OVAC honorable mention for her play in the midfield.
"Abby is super competitive," Carr said. "She'll go after anyone. She doesn't like to be beaten at all. Molly is an asset for her header skills. She's very tall and brings a wicked whip shot."
Remaining seniors include three-year letterwinners Niki Baker and Katelyn Goodwin, two-year letterwinner Kasey Decker and newcomer Chrissy St. Clair.
The lone remaining junior on the squad is outside fullback Jacqueline Stevens.
A trio of sophomores return from last season, including Raquel Theodosopolous, Kelly Sylvis and Abbey Worthington.
The team's lone freshman is backup goalkeeper Liz Mitchell.
"We're going to be a fun team this year," Carr said. "We're going to press the ball a lot and we won't be hanging back on defense. We have four solid experienced players on the back line and Paige in goal, so we'll be pushing the pace as much as possible. I think we can put together a winning season with the parts we have."
Cambridge opens play Wednesday, Aug. 26 at Dover at 5 p.m.
What we allow, we encourage.
