Cambridge girl netters look for continued improvement
Jeff Harrison
The Daily Jeffersonian
Last year, the Cambridge High girls' tennis team did a lot of work with the fundamentals.
Now, it's time to start competing.
Second-year coach Courtney King has a larger than usual roster of 15 girls as the Lady Bobcats look to improve on a one-victory season (1-11 overall and 0-6 in the East Central Ohio League).
"This year we have another young team," King began, "however, we have 10 returning players from last season which will help tremendously. Having that many returning with experience will be great because they will be able to help the younger players to develop their skills, as well as start thinking more strategically after having a previous season under their belt.
"Last year, we were more focused on developing basic skills and fundamentals," the Cambridge coach continued. "This year, we can focus more on strategy and competition. The girls are a lot smarter this year as far as thinking about the actual game of tennis."
"Many of the girls have worked very hard over the summer to improve for the upcoming season," said King. "I see a lot of potential and enthusiasm for learning. I'm expecting the team to continue to grow and get stronger in all aspects, and perhaps capture a few more wins this year."
Cambridge's roster features five seniors, seven juniors, one sophomore and two freshmen.
A pair of two-year letterwinners top the senior group -- Jessi Zaleski and Rachael Clary. The other seniors are Joselyn Hermones, Alyssa Offutt and Danielle Titko.
Two veterans are among the juniors -- two-year letterwinner Gracie Ferndon and one-year letterwinner Addy Ruby. The other 11th graders are Madison Carroll, Lauren Braido, Melissa Wilson, Amanda Shreve and Katelyn Fausett.
Rounding out the squad are sophomore Sarah Scrudders and freshmen Katie Cummings and Myranda Allen.
The Lady Bobcats lost two players via graduation -- Hilary Miller and Katie Burris.
Cambridge opens the season Tuesday at home against Zanesville at the Cambridge City Park Tennis Courts.
What we allow, we encourage.
