WEST LAFAYETTE -- By a gnat's eyelash.
That's how close it was between Meadowbrook and John Glenn for the sixth and final team qualifying spot for the OHSAA Division II District Tournament, with the Colts edging out the Muskies by a single stroke (336-337) at the D-II Sectional Tournament at River Greens Golf Course on Wednesday.
East Liverpool emerged as the team champion via a fifth-man tie-breaker, edging Indian Creek after both teams carded 327 scores. Minerva was right behind at 328 followed by Sandy Valley (329), Maysville (331) and Meadowbrook (336).
John Glenn finished seventh at 337 followed by Fort Frye (340), Coshocton (343), West Muskingum (345), West Holmes (347), Carrollton (348), Beaver Local (350), Dover (351), Philo (351), St. Clairsville (354), Buckeye Local (355), Steubenville (355), River View (359), Martins Ferry (362), Edison (367), Claymont (368), Harrison Central (372), Union Local (374), Tuscarawas Valley (375), Cambridge (381), Morgan (405), Indian Valley (415) and Bellaire (449).
The top six individuals not on qualifying teams included Anthony Monaco of Dover (73), Eddie Romito of West Muskingum (75), Dalton Kirkbride of Philo (76), Kyle Corder of Coshocton (79), Myron Jellison of Union Local (81) and Bryan Neader of Fort Frye (81).
Meadowbrook's Matt Miller tied for overall medalist honors with Dover's Monaco by carding a 73. Other scores for the Colts included Cole Pennington (79), Eli Pesuit (90), Joey Ferguson (94) and Josh Haught (96).
"When you have three scores in the 90s, you're fortunate to advance," offered MHS coach Mel Pesuit. "We pumped four balls in the water on the last hole. It was a tough day to play and if you're able to move on, you feel good about that.
"I feel really bad for John Glenn," the MHS coach added. "To miss (qualifying) by one stroke is tough...I've been there."
John Glenn's 337 total included an 82 from Steven Hixson followed by Jericho Hatfield (84), Connor Reinbeau (85), Michael Magyar (86) and Daniel Hixson (89).
"We could make a thousand excuses," offered John Glenn coach Chad Orecchio. "It was a mixed bag of weather out there, but it boils down to we weren't one of the best six teams today. We've been playing better and sometimes it's a consistency thing with a young lineup. We just had a couple of holes that really hurt us today."
Orecchio says the future is very bright for John Glenn golf.
"We've had a good season," he said. "We finished second in the MVL, so the progress was there and four of the five who played today will be back."
For Cambridge, Austin Wilkinson was the low man with an 85 followed by Nathan Wright (92), Jared Jamiel (99), Tyler Hitzel (105) and Michael George (107).
NEXT-- Meadowbrook will compete in the D-II District Tournament at River Greens Golf Course on Monday. The teams and individuals from the Eastern District will be joined by those from the Central District.
What we allow, we encourage.
