BYESVILLE — A long night of volleyball was made even longer by a valiant comeback attempt from host Meadowbrook High, but Cambridge had just enough to hold on for a five-game victory in a “Volley for the Cure” match on Tuesday.
Cambridge seemed in total control after winning the first two games by 25-19 and 25-21 scores, but Meadowbrook refused to give in and came back to win the next two, 25-21 aqnd 25-16, to even things up. The Lady Bobcats then managed a 15-13 victory in the deciding game to complete a regular season sweep of the Lady Colts.
It wasn’t as easy as the first go-round when Cambridge (12-2, 6-2 ECOL) disposed of Meadowbrook (11-7, 3-5 ECOL) in three straight games.
“I wasn’t even happy with the way we played in the first two games tonight,” said Cambridge coach Rod Johnson. “We would get leads and fritter them away and we’ve done that for the last week or so.
“Part of that was not having (injured sophomore) Brittany Berger in the lineup,” the CHS coach related, and I thought once she got in there, it allowed us to move Vontisa (Harvey) back to her normal spot outside and she got some big kills for us in game five.
“Give Kelly’s kids credit in games three and four,” Johnson said of Coach Kelly Singleton’s Lady Colts. “They just wanted it more than we did. We had our blocking defense keyed on (Candace) Neff and (Katherine) Jirles, but (Shelby) Stover really hurt us when we did that.”
Johnson said game his game five strategy was pretty simple.
“We told our setters that they’ve got to give Vontisa and Rebecca (Cline) most of the sets,” he stated. “There are times when you just have to go to your go-to players and we did.”
On the other side, Meadowbrook’s Singleton was proud of her team not giving up down 0-2.
“Our girls played their hearts out,” she commented. “In the first two games, I don’t know where we were at, but once we figured out we could play with them, we played with more energy.
“Coming off two big wins,” Singleton continued, “I think we relaxed for a second at the beginning of the night and you can’t go that against a good team. A couple of bad serves in the fifth game or it might have been a different story at the end.”.
Cambridge got big efforts at the net from Cline (16 kills), Candice Bumgardner (16 kills), Harvey (15 kills) and Katie Davis (10) kills, with Davis also collecting five blocks.
Jordan Miller was 25-of-26 serving and Cline made good on 18-of-19 attempts while Maggie Starr was 39-of-40 in passing and Alysa Rice dished out 25 assists.
For Meadowbrook, Jirles pounded 29 kills and added a dozen digs; Stover had 11 kills and seven blocks; and Neff posted nine kills and 15 digs. Bre Voytko handed out 49 assists; Sara Stine scored 12 points; Stefanie Beskid had 11 digs and was 52-of-60 passing; and Darien Singleton added four blocks.
NEXT— Both teams are back in action Thursday, with Cambridge hosting New Philadelphia and Meadowbrook traveling to Dover. JV action at both sites begins at 5:30 p.m.
What we allow, we encourage.
