* There was a time to call a play and a time to let them play. It was time to let them play. (Writing of the US-Spain game in the Olympics in which the USA led by 2 points with 8 minutes, 23 sec. to play)
* You do not select a team, you select a group of people and then work together to develop into a team. In other words, teams don't instantaneously become, they evolve. To do so, you need time, goals, and competition.
* Leaders are responsible for ensuring that you spend both the necessary quantity and quality of time to get the job done and for making certain that no time is wasted.
* Jerry Colangelo said it best: "Guys who play together can beat a group of all-stars on any given night." Team over talent, Collective identity over individual ego.
* There are certain personnel components that I believe will make any team better, in basketball or business....For one thing, there is no substitute for talent....I also believe that a team needs some people with experience--veterans.....We had to find a group that could work together offensively. But, more important, we had to select people who could come together and become one solid force on the defensive end of the court.
* When building a team, the members of that time need to be explicityly told what the parameters of their commitment are going to be, what is expected of them. The honesty and openness of your initial comunication with these individuals lays the groundwork for the future of your relationship.
* Your team's people are the ones who are going to accomplish that mission. Before you get into the details of your strategy, your X's and O's, you have to decide first who is the X and who is the O.
* When you don't have time to properly prepare, diffcult tends to become impossible.
* Failure can be an essential step on the path to success. It means you have tested your limits and likely learned a great deal. If failure does occur, a leader should use it productively.
* Just to put in perspective the magnitude of basketball's popularity in China, our nation's total population is around 300 million. In China, around 300 million people play basketball.
* And as the old saying reminds us, those who do not learn from the past are doomed to repeat it.
* "What makes teams great is selfless service. It's putting the needs of someone else before yourself. On the basketball court that may be diving for a loose ball or taking a charge."...Colonel Bob Brown
* The relationships that a leader wants to see develop among his or her team are based on communication.
* I emphasize honesty in forming strong systems of communication. That is why in choosing your people it is important to be up front and honest with them right from the start. Communication brings about trust.
* In a team environment, the talent and expertise of the person next to you is not a threat, but an opportunity.
* For three summers, we would gather in a hotel meeting room prior to every single practice...These meetings were an integral part of instilling our system of communication...The importance of face-to-face communication is a very simple concept, but those opportunities are becoming more scarce in our fast-paced and increasingly technological society.
What we allow, we encourage.
