NEW CONCORD —Behind the play of a stingy defense, the Cambridge High boys’ soccer team cruised to a 5-2 victory over John Glenn on Thursday.
For Cambridge (3-8-1), Tim Fox opened the scoring in the first half, sending a place kick high into the back of the net at the 35:38 mark to give the Bobcats a 1-0 advantage.
Shortly after, Chris Pearson recorded the first of his two assists when he found teammate Ryan Jamiel for another score with 32:17 left in the half to expand the lead to 2-0 in favor of the ’Cats.
John Glenn (3-6-1) responded quickly, using a Haden Wallis goal with 27:44 remaining. Kade Davis accounted for the assist, making it 2-1.
With 23 minutes to go in the half, Davis took advantage of some momentary confusion on the field and snuck a header past Cambridge goalie Matt Drotovick to knot the score at 2-2.
Cambridge answered with the final goal of the half, when Greg Fox found his brother Tim Fox for a long shot into the nylon at 12:25, giving the ’Cats a 3-2 lead before the break.
In the second half, it was all Cambridge, as the defense clamped down to hold the Muskies scoreless in the frame.
Pearson wasted no time in scoring the Bobcats’ next goal, as he used a Jamiel assist to fire a rocket from midfield and raise the count to 4-2 with 37:35 remaining.
Next, Pearson dished it to Andrew Bertubin, who sent the ball home with a heel-kick with 33:03 on the clock.
The Bertubin goal would seal the deal for the Bobcats at 5-2, giving them a crucial win late in the season.
“We moved the ball fairly well, and we needed to improve on control, which I felt we did tonight,” Cambridge mentor J.R. Fox said of his team.
In the net, Andrew Fitzgerald and Corey Cale had three and five saves, respectively, for John Glenn. For the Bobcats, Drotovick stopped 13 shots, and Quintin Fettes snared two.
Cambridge snapped off 18 shots-on-goal, while John Glenn managed 16.
NEXT — Cambridge will be idle until Saturday, Oct. 10 when hosting John Glenn at 12 p.m.
What we allow, we encourage.
