CAMBRIDGE -- The Bobcats volleyball team came ready to make a statement on Tuesday night against Indian Creek, sweeping them in three games 25-12, 25-16, 25-21.
Indian Creek (16-2) was previously 10th in the Division II state rankings.
The Lady 'Cats (15-2) came out swinging, declaring their dominance at the net in the first game. Vontisa Harvey and Rebecca Cline tallied three kills apiece in the game, and with the score at 17-10 in favor of the hosts, Candice Bumgardner fired off seven straight points serving to give Cambridge the push it needed to take the opening game.
In the second game, it was another dose of the same medicine, as Harvey and Cline combined for ten kills and Katie Caldwell strung together a rally of seven straight points. Cline punctuated the game with a vicious kill to put away the Redskins. Brittany Berger added three kills for the Lady 'Cats.
It was a back-and-forth struggle for momentum in the final game, until Harvey smashed her fourth kill for the game point, solidifying the win for Cambridge.
"We have been pointing to this match for a long time," Cambridge coach Rod Johnson said. "It was a big match with a lot of Sectional drawing and OVAC implications."
The Cambridge attack was led by Harvey with 10 kills and five blocks. Cline added 10 kills; Bumgardner went 19-of-19 serving; Katie Caldwell recorded a 17-of-18 serving mark; Jordan Miller distributed 16 assists; and Berger picked up five blocks and five kills.
"This was the best blocking night we have had this season," remarked Johnson of his team's effort up front. "The girls in the front row have been working harder, and I thought we hit the ball above average.
Morgan Reducha set the pace for Indian Creek with seven kills and nine digs. Christina Furda added 19 assists, three digs, a kill and a block; Taylor Fithen picked up five kills and two digs; Ty Harris registered four kills and four digs; and Brittany Vella chipped in with seven digs, two kills, and a block.
"It was just a great win," Johnson added. "And I told the girls in the locker room that we can't throw away this effort tonight by losing to Coshocton tomorrow night"
