The Daily-Jeff
Visiting Coshocton gave the Bobcats a little scare with a 25-21 win in the opening set Thursday, but the ’Cats swept the next three sets by scores of 25-22, 25-17 and 25-13 to claim a 3-1 East Central Ohio League victory and remain in second place in the league race.
It was a night of firsts as it was the first time in Coach Rod Johnson’s coaching career that he has had five players record double digit numbers in kills and, with Cambridge improving to 16-2 overall and 8-2 in the ECOL, it is the most regular season wins since the early or mid-1990s.
“We may have had a little letdown after a big match against Indian Creek on Wednesday,” Johnson admitted, “but to Coshocton’s credit, they got off the bus ready to play and it was a good wake-up call for us. We didn’t play our best match tonight, but we played really balanced.”
In serving, Jordan Miller was 14-of-14 while Rebecca Cline was 14-of-15 with two aces. Katie Caldwell added a 20-of-22 performance and Candice Bumgardner was 15-of-16 from the service line. Miller also handed out 24 assists and Alysa Rice added 16. Maggie Starr was 49-of-53 passing with 12 digs. Cline added 15 digs and Bumgardner tacked on 13.
Leading the hit parade was Cline with 22 kills with Vontisa Harvey close behind with 21. Katie Davis and Brittany Berger slammed 11 kills each, with Berger adding five blocks. Rounding out the five hitters in double figures was Paige Young with 10 stops.
Ali Bates led the Redskins (4-12, 1-10 ECOL) at the net with 25 kills, while Chelsea Dobson dished out 17 assists and Alli Kittell recorded 17 digs.
