DENNISON — East Central Ohio League Commissioner John Neighbor announced Monday the league has added Zanesville High School.
The ECOL principals voted to add the Blue Devils during a meeting held on Monday afternoon. With the addition of Zanesville, they also voted to go to a divisional set-up in football, with the divisions as follows:
Black Division: Cambridge; Dover; New Philadelphia and Zanesville.
White Division: Claymont; Coshocton; Meadowbrook and River View.
There will be league champions in each division. The ECOL principals will meet again in December to hopefully admit at least two more schools. When the league goes to ten schools or more there will be a two division set up for football, volleyball, boys/girls basketball, baseball, and softball with a champion in each division, in each sport.
Championships in wrestling, swimming, cross country, track, golf and tennis will be determined by a league tournament.
I look for the ECOL to continue expansion, possibly adding two more schools. The has been discussion about Marietta, Zanesville Rosecrans, and the return of Indian Valley. Ideally, Marietta and one of either Rosecrans or Indian Valley would join.
The league would then be split into the following divisions.
Black Divsion:
Cambridge; Dover; Marietta; New Philadelphia and Zanesville.
White Division:
Claymont; Coshocton; Meadowbrook: River View and Indian Valley or Rosecrans.
In football you would play each team in your division and either one or two schools from the other division as to be determined by the league.
In other sports such as basketball you would play each school in your division twice and each of the schools from the other division once. Of course you can schedule more games from the other division if you wish.
In other news, the OHSAA is under pressure to add to games to the basketball schedule enabling each school to play 22 regular season contests.
What we allow, we encourage.
