Playing “Thursday Night Football” gives John Glenn and New Philadelphia the local spotlight to themselves this week.
For the unbeaten Quakers (8-0), it’s a chance to move one step closer to a perfect season and an OHSAA playoff spot.
For the struggling Muskies (2-6), it’s an opportunity to knock off a state-ranked opponent in the last home game of the season on the turf at McConagha Stadium.
Veteran John Glenn coach John Kelley likes the idea of a Thursday game.
“We’ve got them here,” he said, “and I like the idea of playing on a Thursday because that (playing Saturday as they did the last several years against Martins Ferry) cuts into next week’s preparation time.”
When facing New Philly, the Muskies will have to contend with one of the area’s premier players in senior back Will McEwan, who has rushed for nearly 1,400 yards and scored 29 touchdowns thus far.
“Their tailback is pretty good,” Kelley understated.
“They’re a physical team that runs a tailback offense. They’re going to line up and make you stop them.”
While New Philly is coming off a 42-0 thumping of Cambridge, John Glenn suffered a tough 21-20 loss to Muskingum Valley League foe Maysville. The Muskies had three costly first-half turnovers, and Kelley says that has to be addressed.
“We’ve got to eliminate the mistakes,” he said.
“Injuries have hurt us this year, too, and we’ve been working in a lot of younger kids. It’s been a learning experience and we have to keep trying to get better.”
New Philly, ranked fifth in this week’s AP Division II state poll, has scored at least 41 points in every game this season. The Quakers are fifth in the OHSAA Division II, Region 7 computer ratings.
What we allow, we encourage.
