ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The Cambridge volleyball team extended its season Saturday evening, sweeping Steubenville in three games, 25-15, 25-22, 25-12, to capture the Division II Sectional championship.
The win advances Cambridge (21-3) to the D-II District at West Lafayette Ridgewood where they will face Guernsey County rival Meadowbrook. Cambridge has defeated the Colts twice this season.
Cambridge, which knocked off Carrolton in the first round, used a variety of players to score points, getting especially important rallies from the serving line and forcing Steubenville to commit errors in order to take the sectional championship.
The first game saw Cambridge jump out to an early lead before pulling away, utilizing the net play of Brittany Berger to take a 25-15 victory.
In the second frame, Steubenville took the lead until the Lady ’Cats rallied from a five-point deficit, with Katie Caldwell and Jordan Miller serving effectively.
The final game was a runaway, as Cambridge vaulted to a 12-point lead behind the service of Candice Bumgardner, Alysa Rice and Miller. In the closing volleys, nine unforced errors committed by the Lady Big Red aided the Lady Bobcats as they coasted to a 25-12 decision.
The Lady Bobcats’ attack was led by Bumgardner with a 15-of-15 serving mark (two aces), nine digs, and a perfect 20-of-20 passing record. Miller added a 13-of-13 serving tally and 19 assists; Rice chipped in 10 assists and two aces; Maggie Starr picked up 13 digs; Rebecca Cline slammed eight kills and logged 10 digs; and Katie Davis registered 10 blocks and seven kills.
Hannah Mayer piloted Big Red (13-10) with seven kills while Terri Lynn Wolfe led the defense with 10 digs. Bethanie Myers directed the offense with 12 assists.
Veteran Cambridge coach Rod Johnson was pleased with the team’s effort, although the Lady ’Cats were feeling the effects of three players out due to illness.
“It wasn’t our best game,” Johnson admitted, “but we were not 100 percent and it makes it especially a nice win because of that.
“I give credit to Steubenville because they were overlooked by a lot of people and they really pushed us tonight and gave us some problems,” the Cambridge mentor concluded.
