West Holmes repeats as champion;
Bobcats’ Roller bags individual title
CAMBRIDGE -- Millersburg West Holmes repeated as team champion in the Southeastern Med/Southeastern Sports Med and Orthopedic Services Invitational hosted by Cambridge High School on Saturday.
Cambridge had one individual winner —senior 182-pounder Tanner Roller — while Kevin Scrudders earned a runner-up finish.
West Holmes took the team title with 190 points, edging Minerva which finished at 183. Canal Winchester placed third with 172; Cambridge was fourth with 153.5 and Canal Fulton Northwest was fifth with 140.5. Rounding out the top 10 were Gnadenhutten Indian Valley (130.5), Lisbon Beaver Local (129), Marietta (115), McConnelsville Morgan (103.5) and Sunbury Big Walnut (89).
Roller scored four pins en route to the 182-pound championship, capped by a fall against James Lutes of Minerva in the finals in 1:55 which gave Roller a perfect 5-0 mark for the tournament.
To reach the finals, Roller had pins over Tim Fitzwater of Canal Fulton Northwest (1:17), Jhordan Lang of Big Walnut (1:12) and Kenny White of Morgan (2:30) and a forfeit victory.
Scrudders lost in the finals at 138 pounds, with Joe Boswell of Canal Winchester scoring technical fall in the finals, 22-7, to give Scrudders a 4-1 tournament record.
To make the championship bout, Scrudders won by decision over Matt Oakes of Canal Fulton Northwest (8-6), and pinned Scot Birch of Minerva (2:56), Chris O’kain of Morgan (33 seconds) and Anthony Roberto of Big Walnut (2:58).
Two CHS grapplers finished in third place and three others were fourth.
Jordan Ball claimed third at 103 pounds, posting a 3-1 record including a pin of Tyler Nichols of West Holmes in 3:51 in the consolation finals; and JT Good was third at 126 pounds, capping a 3-1 tournament with a 4-2 decision over John Haines of Marietta in his final bout.
Taking fourth place were Logan Hickenbottom at 145 pounds, who went 3-3 in the tournament including a 53-second pinfall loss to Kyle Harris of Canal Fulton Northwest; Sawyer Leppla at 152 pounds, finishing 3-2 and dropping a 12-5 decision to Aaron Gase of Big Walnut in the consolation finals; and Eric Fox at 170, who also went 3-2 with a 13-5 loss to Grayson Miller of West Holmes in the consolation final.
Cambridge also had on wrestler take fifth place and two finish sixth.
Wesley Lewis was fifth at 113 pounds, completing a 4-2 day by beating Donny Didion of Big Walnut in the consolation final.
John Mercer took sixth at 160, suffering a pinfall in 2:09 to Morgan’s Caleb Driggs in the consolation match, giving Mercer a 2-4 mark on the day.
Kordell Stage was also sixth for the Bobcats, losing his final match of the day in the 285-pound division by pin to Cody Valentine of Indian Valley in 33 seconds, giving Stage a 1-3 record in the tournament.
Justin Stitzlein of West Holmes, the 152-pound champion, was named the tournament’s outstanding wrestler while Beaver Local’s Josh Henderson took the award for the most pins in the shortest time (five falls in 7:37).
