As Kana's Ex-Servant led the Wolfen down a long corridor to their next destination, the young girl explained, "Okay, how to know if a man is interested in you or not. First, if a man has any interest in you whatsoever his body language will give him away if his mouth doesn't do it first. For example, if he smiles at you, draws close to you and looks you up and down before he speaks to you, then there is a good chance that he is genuniely interested in you as a possible lovemate. That's the easy part."
"OK," the Wolfen stated in a bit of confusion. She tried to keep in mind that it was different in the Realm.
Serna added with a frown, "The hard part is when he speaks. Guys, being guys, can say some of the dumbest things in the world to try and pick up a girl. Usually, they try to be witty or charming or coy or compliment you on your beauty. It's their way to say that they like you and that's the right way to go about it. The wrong way is when they try to grab you or insult you or grope you where they shouldn't. I don't know about your home Gorrius, but here in the Realm, it would be perfectly appropriate for you to slap such a guy in the face after he made that kind of an insulting advance. We call guys like that a jerk or a pervert."
However, Serna noticed Kana's rather sharp claws and added, "Uh, scratch that, just slap him in the face without using your claws. You want to show the jerk how displeased you are NOT maim him at your first meeting. Any questions?"
"How can I tell the difference between friendship and interest? I normally stayed away from guys that might have thoughts on anything other than friendship," Kana asked while trying to keep all the true details out. "What if a guy seems to offer interest, but only wants friendship?"
Serna giggled, "Those are easy questions, Mistress Kana. First, you can tell the difference between friendship and interest by all the little things that a guy says and does. A guy wants to be your friend if he just wants to talk with you about non-romantic stuff like kissing or hugging or making-out; if he just wants to hang out with you rather than hold your hand when you are together; and if he flat out tells you that he just wants to be friends."
Kana's Ex-Servant added, "On the other hand, a guy wants to be your lover if he gives you a lot of romantic talk or kisses you or hugs you or makes out with you from time to time. He is also interested in you if he chooses to hold your hand while you are walking together like Master Willow Bark and High Lady Alyson do; and if he has trouble telling you that he loves you."
Serna shook her head, "You see, Mistress Kana, that is the funny thing about guys. They are quick to tell you that they want to be your friend, but they are VERY slow to tell you that they love you. Why that is? I do not know. It's just the way things guys are, I guess."
As they rounded a corner in the hallway, the young girl added, "As to your second question, if a guy seems to offer interest but only wants friendship then that means that he was interested in you as a lover, but he changed his mind and now would like to settle with you being his friend. When that happens, Mistress Kana, don't be disappointed but just settle for being his friend and call it good. No harm, no foul."
Serna continued unabated, "As for what you do in a relationship, that's easy as well. First, you speak the truth about the guy you love. Guys are suckers for the truth, Mistress Kana, and genuinely appreciate a girl that's honest with them. Second, you find the one thing he holds dear or the one thing he does well and you compliment him on it. Whether its his clothing or his fighting skill or his good looks, men are vain and they love a good compliment as much as the next person. Third, you do romantic stuff with them--kissing, making-out, holding hands, going out to dinner, strolling on moonlit nights--you know, those things that I mentioned before."
With a mischievous gleam in her eye, Serna concluded, "And fourth, you make them spend money on you. When you go out to dinner, have them pick up the tab. When you go out for a stroll, have them buy flowers for you. When its your birthday, have them buy a gift for you. If a guy loves you--I mean REALLY loves you--he won't think twice about doing these little things for you every now and then. Granted, you don't have to spend him into the poor house, but you should expect him to be a gentleman and treat you really special from time to time."
Kana's Ex-Servant added, "By the by, Mistress Kana, when is your birthday? And how do you celebrate it in your culture? Also, do you have any other questions that I could answer for you on dating or men or falling in love? He! He! He!"
