She studied the dwarf more closely this time and corrected herself by stating, "Alyson Khyng, Sorceror, and Elemental witch."
"Now that is a name worth knowing," nodded the Dwarf in agreement, "I have heard many tales of a Madeous Khyng, any relation of yours by chance?"
"Madeous Khyng, you say?" Alyson asked him but didn't want to spill the beans just yet she was related to Madeous Khyng. No, all things would be revealed in time, "I've heard tales of him too, Myron. Just not all of them."
Moving away from the grate and deeper into the sewers, the Dwarf asked, "Well, Alyson, where shall we go from here. If you are right, sooner or later, they're going to come after us down here. Granted, they won't be able to sniff us out because of the stench, but they can see better in the dark than us--well, at least you anyway!"
"Perhaps I want them to SEE me, and perhaps not, Myron. Besides silver being their bane, fire also works really well too. Speaking of fire, do know where there are any forges around town? Preferly really big ones." The elementalist said ducking out of the way of the remains of some unfortunate critter that was smeared into the wall.
"That's an easy enough question to answer, Alyson Khyng," replied Myron haunching his shoulders as he marched forward, "The largest forge in town is Old Krupple's Ironwork which is located in the eastern quarter of the city--clear on the other side of town. We can get there from here through the sewers, but I would not fancy our chances of reaching it if those monsters choose to come down here instead of remain up there. Werewolves can see better in the dark than you Humans can. I, on the other hand, can see better in the dark than the lot of you!"
"So, do you have any friends in town?" Myron continued his inquiry, "Anyone or anyplace that you know where we can hold up until this whole mess blows over?"
"Sorry, Myron I got separated from my friends just before all hell broke loose in the city. What friends I had when we entered, I left them at the tavern. By the way, do you know of anyone who would have recently conjoured up, or hired a doppleganger?" Inquired Alyson.
"Well which tavern do you speak of, Alyson Khyng," snarled the Dwarf impatiently, "There are at least twenty of them scattered through out Fair Weather, you know. The name of a single one would help give us a little direction here. Besides, I could use a little ale to brace my nerves and stiffen my back for battle."
The Dwarf thought about Alyson's question for a full minute before he replied, "And as far as a Doppleganger goes, you need to go to the Assassin's Guild of Fair Weather on such a matter as that. They sometimes use such dark allies as Dopplegangers and their ilk to replace those whom they kill when one of their dark masters need such a job to be done."
Myron stopped his advance, "Why do you ask? You need their services for something? Or have you run afoul of them?"
"Because," her eyes glowed red again, though briefly, "someone has taken my beloved friend from me and replaced him with a doppleganger. And, while this imposter thought he did his best to deceive me, he failed. For, I, cannot be deceived. True-seeing comes in rather handy, don't you think?”
“I would dare say yes,” admitted Myron with a firm nod as he led Alyson deeper into the sewers, “If you can tell truth from falsehood, at the very least you can tell whether people are lying to you or not. And that, Alyson, is a rare gift. I’m sorry that your lovemate was taken from you, but I hope you find out who did it and roast them alive. I know for a fact that if someone took my wife and replaced her with a doppleganger, I would thrash the dark creature until he gave her up. And then, I would thrash him some more for taking her from me.”
The Dwarf turned back to the Elementalist, “But you still have not answered my question, which inn are your friends staying in? It sure would help to--”
Myron snapped his fingers, “Wait a minute! I just had a great idea! You said you needed fire, aye? Preferably a REALLY big fire, huh? Well, will a fire born in Fair Weather’s largest bakery do? Haydel’s Bakery is two blocks dead ahead from where we are now. If the building isn’t burned to the ground and the kiln hasn’t been snuffed out, could you not use that for whatever magic you need to work?”
Pointing down an adjacent corridor, the Dwarf added, “Or would you rather we move on to Old Krupple’s Ironwork? It will take us longer to get to it, but the fires there are certain to be lit. The choice, Alyson, is yours?”
