“No building in Fair Weather is over four stories tall,” added Irzen as they made their way to the top of the structure, “So you don’t have to worry about a long climb. The alleys are narrow so you don’t have to worry about long jumps either. But the roofs are made of a light tile, too much weight could cause them to collapse. And unless I miss my guess, the Harlech Inn is no more than a hundred yards from here to the west. If we can make it, we should be safe. I hope.”
As they quickly made their approach to the fourth story window, Irzen covered his head with his free arm and leaned downward. The Drow knew what was coming and did not fancy what Kana was about to do one bit. Meanwhile, the five Werewolves that gave chased to them barreled up the narrow staircases single file until the fourth floor corridor gave them enough room to spread out and continue the chase.
Getting to the top of the steps, Kana crashed through the window to the roof of the opposite building, and keeping in mind what Irzen said about the roofs, took off for the Inn. She knew she could tread lightly if necessary, and hoped the roof was too fragile for the Werewolves.
The Werewolves continued their chase with all deliberate speed as they leapt through the broken window sill after The Drow and The Wolfen. The first Werewolf through the broken window accidentally caught his left paw on the window sill itself and fell to his death in the alley below him before he could properly complete his jump.
Though one of their number was down, the other four Werewolves pursued their prey unabated leaping from rooftop to rooftop until the Werewolf in the rear discovered the truth of Irzen’s words when he landed too hard upon a roof and crashed through the ceiling into someone’s living room. And then there were three in hot pursuit of The Realmers...
Kana pulled all her training into action on the roof. Getting close to some of the chimneys, she would try to swipe at them to get them to topple, or try to shove loose the tiles so that they would slide if any weight was put on them. All the while taking direction from Irzen.
“Good job, Kana, good job!” smiled Irzen with some hope in his voice, “That should make their life difficult to say the least.”
The Wolfen’s ploys worked to near perfection as she and Irzen leapt from rooftop to rooftop. On the second roof they reached, the pair lost a Werewolf when Kana toppled a chimney and caused their pursuer to step onto some loose bricks and slip off of the roof.
By the time the pair reached their fourth roof, Kana and Irzen lost yet another Werewolf when the tiles the Wolfen uprooted gave way beneath the Werewolf and trapped the poor creature up to its waist in the roof itself.
“This is it! This is it!” cried Irzen, “We’re home free! All we have to do is clear this last building and we will have reached the Harlech Inn.”
However, the luck of the pair finally gave out as they executed their final jump. Because the building they were standing on had four floors and the Harlech Inn only had two floors, the increased velocity and impact of Kana’s jump was felt squarely upon the weak tiles of The Harlech Inn. The moment they hit the roof, the structure gave way beneath them and Kana and Irzen crashed into the hallway not more than a few yards from where their companions were standing.
