Dear Tommy,
While it is true that Gareth is not very familiar with the variety of magical traditions which The Gamer has at his disposal, Gareth would not consider your spell to be too flashy at all. Especially considering the fact that he is both a Druid and an Archmage who often uses the "flashy" magic that nature itself provides. Tapping into the raw energy of an active volcano and using it as a weapon is flashy; summoning up a series of cyclones so powerful that they can devastate a city the size of New York is flashy; heck even conjuring up a tidal wave to sink an armada of invading warships is flashy. All of these are these things Gareth can do or has done. To him, Tommy's magic in this regard is not so much as flashy as it is necessary for a well-conceived and well-executed spell.
