The surge of energy within the Talisman slowly subsided.
"Remember what Dungeon Master said Serna--" warned the Ranger.
"--the Talisman cannot be taken it must be given," added the Swordsman, "God only knows what that thing would do to you and Tommy if you tried to seize it. Let it be, Serna, and give Tommy the time he needs to work his magic. Okay?"
Serna nodded her head in agreement.
Irzen turned towards both Alyson and Seriah, "Ladies, if Kana cannot bear the weight of the Eleventh Talisman would either of you be willing to serve as its Bearer in her place?"
"I can not, nor will I," Alyson shook her head, "This talisman is not for me to bear."
"I understand why, now" Kana said as she stood. Around her now were glowing toadstools coming from in-between the lichen. "She is helping me. She wants to keep it away from Him as well. This growth is only a side effect because of what I am. If I don't allow it, I will be of no use."
"Are you okay now?" Tommy asked the Wolfen. "If needed, and with your consent, I think I can…dampen your connection with the Talisman. It would just make the voices quieter. Think of it as the magical equivalent of putting your fingers in your ears."
"No, no," Kana answered Tommy. "They've subsided. But thank you."
The Gamer continued. "As for Horn Head and the Talisman, this is my current best idea: I can relocate the enchantment of the Talisman – preferably to another item, though in a pinch we could make your body the focus for the magical matrix. Given the time crunch we're under, I'd have to do it the quick and dirty method, which means I'd need everyone's help. We then give the Talisman of Dragon Control, that is to say the object currently around Kana's neck, to Blue Boy, thus fulfilling the letter of our agreement with him."
"Play the old shell game with Venger?" Irzen rubbed his chin, "I don't know, Tommy, it sounds slightly more suicidal than the normal suicidal things we do to complete a mission."
"People have thought of the Talisman as an object for so long," Kana said, "that we won't be breaking our oath because it is the necklace itself he's wanting and expecting."
"It'll work, I know it will," added Neven with a vicious grin, "We could do it, Master Tommy, we could put one over on The Dark Lord. It would be no different than pulling a bait-and-switch on a rich Jeweler who believes the jewel he is getting is worth more than it actually is." The young Thief added as an afterthought, "Not that I ever ran that kind of a scam on anyone mind you."
"Liar!" snapped Serna with a firm "Humph!"
The Thief's sole response was to stick out his tongue at The Shield Maiden.
Kana placed her hand on Serna's shoulder to keep her from responding to Neven's taunt.
"Still Venger would not see it coming," Willow Bark nodded his head in agreement, "For us to strike at him like this would be the least he would expect. I say let us put your plan into action, Tommy, if for no other reason than the one I have just mentioned."
"Agreed!" the Swordsman gave his consent, "Though we better prepare ourselves for Venger's wrath when he realizes that he has been had. Especially you, Alyson, the Dark Lord has taken quite a fancy to making you suffer for not joining him of your own free will. Are you up for confronting him once again knowing full well that he may try to use the Talisman against you?"
Tommy's gaze quickly swept across the treasure chamber. "Kana, if we go with this plan, can you see if Aurilaz has some orichalcum she can lend to the project? That would be ideal, though star silver and a crystallized dragon's tear would work, too." Tommy shrugged. "Heck, I can use anything as the telesma, but there's no reason to make this more difficult than we have to. Actually, there would be several advantages to using your body as the focus, though orichalcum would make even that process easier." He sighed. "I'd rather avoid the approaches that involve breaking our word, because – ethical and social considerations aside – there would be magical repercussions for me. Call it a geas."
"Then let us not break our word," the Wolfen told Tommy. Then Turning toward the way the Black Dragon had gone when she had left, she called, "Aurilaz. I have need of you again."
