”Jolly good.” The Gamer looked around. “Okay, let's be about it.” He took a small lozenge of sun-bright metal from the chest, then put the chest down and walked several paces away. “Kana, please stand right there, facing me,” he said, pointing to a spot just a couple of steps away. “Sterling, there. Alyson, there. Willow Bark, there. And Serna, there.” As he spoke each person's name, he gestured to their places, forming a circle centered on the Wolfen. He closed his eyes, centering his own thoughts as the others moved into position. A red glow started from his chest, pulsing in time with his heart. The glow spread slowly, stopping once it encompassed the the entire circle. He opened his eyes. “Right, any last questions? If not, light 'em up. Er, that is, invoke the power of your Weapons.”
"Muwha! Ha! Ha! Ha!" Alyson burst into laughter, "Round Two!"
Kana stood in the place Tommy motioned for her.
Willow Bark drew forth a shimmering white Energy Arrow from Kana's Lightning Bow and fired it at Irzen.
"It is your turn, Swordsman," quipped the Ranger.
The Dark Elf used Evenflow to catch and then reflect the Energy Arrow which now appeared to be golden in color.
"Okay, Serna, you're up!" added Sterling as he pointed his blade directly at Serna.
The Swordsman launched the beam of magical energy towards the Shield Maiden who used her Weapon of Power to deflect the now purple beam of magical energy towards the Elementalist.
"It's all yours, High Lady Alyson," concluded Serna proudly as she performed her task.
The elementalist tapped the staff of elements in a clockwise position as she gathered the collected energy and sent it forth to the gamer, "Here it comes, Tommy."
The Gamer stood quietly, feeling the flow of power around him. When Alyson sent the gathered energy towards him, he faced her, catching it within the Jewel on his chest. The Jewel flared brightly, fading from red to white as he turned in a slow clockwise circle.
“Ryuu, Dragon Lord, Ruler of Wind and Rain, grant us your wisdom!” At the Gamer’s call, a serpentine Dragon made of shimmering green energy rose up from the ground below him. The Dragon quickly flew around the Circle, stopping in front of Willow Bark. “Irthir ui dastudr. Shivi coi othokent.” With this cryptic warning, Ryuu vanished from sight leaving only a white light filling the area.
The Gamer spoke again. “Suzaku, Great Phoenix, Bringer of Fortune, bless us with your presence!” A great red bird, seemingly made of fire, erupted from the ground. It flew rapidly around the circle, stopping before Alyson. Suzaku let out a single piercing cry before fading from view, leaving its red light to mix with the white, leaving the area bathed in a golden glow.
“Byakko, White Tiger, Lord of the Mountains, lend us your might!” A third time the Gamer called out, and a spectral white tiger rose up from the ground. The tiger ran around the Circle, stopping before Irzen. Its eyes met those of the Drow, and it seemed to grow. Fading as it expanded, when Byakko was gone all that was left was a purple light filling the chamber.
Once more the Gamer’s voice rose up. “Genbu, Black Tortoise, Vault of the Universe, shield us this night!” The last of the Saintly Beasts rose up through the ground, an immense black turtle the size of an elephant. It moved with all of the deliberateness of a turtle, yet in no time at all it faced Serna. Genbu’s head stretched down until its nose almost touched that of the girl, then it too faded from view, expanding until it seemed the cave was open to the night sky.
The Gamer turned at last to face Kana. The sample of orichalcum in his hand began to glow like the Suns, and floated into the air until it hovered directly before the Wolfen. Tommy took a step back and swept his hands wide. Glowing magical symbols began to fill the air, and a susurrus of voices rose up, seemingly chanting in a dozen tongues.
“RIN!” The Gamer brought his hands together, fingers interlocked, the middle fingers raised and pressed together. The symbols flew out and began spinning around the boundaries of the Circle.
“PYO!” Tommy’s fingers shifted, his index finger and thumb raised and pressed together, middle fingers crossed over index fingers and their tips pressed together. The orichalcum glowed brighter and began to melt, flowing into a sphere.
“TO!” The Gamer re-crossed his fingers, ring and pinky fingers raised. One ring finger pressed against other the ring finger, pinky against other pinky, both sets of ring and pinky fingers separated to form a V shape. The volume of chanting increased, though they still seemed faint and distant.
“SHA!” Hands still together, Tommy rewove his fingers. Index finger and thumb rose together, making a "gun" out of the fingers pointed straight at Kana’s heart. The magical symbols danced back in and began to circle the Wolfen.
“KAI!” The Gamer brought his fingers back together, hands cupped as if holding something concealed. The ball of orichalcum expanded, floating up to hover above Kana’s head.
“JIN!” Tommy’s fingers writhed, and were once more interlocked, but with the fingertips inside. The invisible voices began to come together until they were chanting in a single unrecognizable language.
“RETSU!” The Gamer’ hands separated briefly. His right hand turned in an upward-pointing fist, index finger raised. His left hand gripped the index finger, thumb pressed onto the right index's nail. The orichalcum flowed down, cascading around Kana, merging with the floating symbols. The chanting grew louder still, the words verging on the familiar.
“ZAI!” Tommy’s hands spread out in front, with thumb and index finger touching. The orichalcum symbols stopped, hovering inches from the Wolfen’s body.
“ZEN!” With this final word, the Gamer’s hands formed a circle, thumbs on top and fingers on the bottom, right hand overlapping left up to the knuckles. A beam of blue light lanced out from the Jewel of Judgment, passed through the circle of his fingers and struck the Talisman of Dragon Control. Light flared wildly, and the orichalcum symbols flowed into Kana’s fur, sinking down into her skin and out of sight.
The chanting voices reached a crescendo and stopped. The room sank into darkness, the only light a dim glow from the Talisman of Dragon Control. After a moment, even that flickered and was gone. Seconds passed with no light and no sound. Not even a breath could be heard in the darkness. Then, like a bursting soap bubble, normalcy returned. Light and sound returned. The Gamer stood quietly, hands at his sides, eyes closed. “Genbu, Byakko, Suzaku, Ryuu. Thank you for your protection. Go if you must, stay if you will. Namaste.” He lifted his head, opened his eyes. “The Circle is open, but unbroken. So mote it be.”
